clipless

how many people in here ride their fixies with clipless pedals? it doesn't look as cool as slip-on vans but it is a lil more efficient and smooth.

dijos 11-12-07 01:06 PM

I don't, but I'm looking into it.

obstacle 11-12-07 01:08 PM

This should be fun....ugh.

NitroPye 11-12-07 01:09 PM

I'm tossing my mountain bike's busted up SPDs onto my new fixie build. They only clip in on one side as I busted the other sides on rocks (both pedals).

In my experiences they are great for a commute or any other riding for the sake of riding, not so great for "hey lets ride down to the pub and grab a beer" kind of riding.

roadfix 11-12-07 01:11 PM

My slip-on Vans have SPD drillings so I'm cool in that department.

I Ride Clipless, No Gods No Masters No Clips

queerpunk 11-12-07 01:35 PM

i ride clipless.

this weekend, i put clips and straps on, because i wanted to wear a casual shoe. i was very disappointed.

clipless makes a huge difference.

Fugazi Dave 11-12-07 01:41 PM

In before drama.

I've been riding mostly clips/straps for about a year now and love 'em. Clipless are great too, though.

squirrely1 11-12-07 01:47 PM

i have been riding clipless for about 5 months and it is money

I have Candy SL's and love 'em

jmichaeldesign 11-12-07 02:13 PM

I have Adidas el moro shoes and crank brothers smarty pedals. Absolutely love them. I know the pedals are pretty cheap, but they were 35 and a new set of cleats is 25, so i figured i'd start out with these incase I hated clipless. I'll probably just buy some eggbeaters once the cleats wear out.

I wear my shoes all day long with little to no discomfort. Took a couple weeks to get used to it, but I've stopped carrying a change of shoes now.

knucks 11-12-07 02:20 PM

I'm looking into it for my next build..

Aeroplane 11-12-07 03:01 PM

The only think I don't like about my clipless pedals are that when I am bored and want to try to do wheelies, etc it is hard to do unclipped, and dangerous to do clipped.

Zemo 11-12-07 03:03 PM

I switch my pedals with clips for my roadie spd pedals when I'm feeling especially destructive...huge difference, even between good shoes and tight-ass straps vs. my clipless roadbike shoes. Tons more power, tons more acceleration.

Zemo 11-12-07 03:03 PM

...and I've never had a problem unclipping before a serious wipe-out (riding backwards, wheelies, etc...)

Zombie Carl 11-12-07 03:07 PM

I keep bending my clips to **** (they look like an accordian now.) I want to switch to some eggbeaters, but I can't find decent shoes for a decent price.

brett jerk 11-12-07 03:09 PM

I just switched over this week (buddy hooked me up with a free set of shimano ultegras and a pair of carbon fiber-soled shoes) and the difference in my control is through the roof (I had a really ****ty trap/strap setup before). I could immediately do seated skids. It sucks cause It means I have to bring a pair of shoes with me to school, but i can deal.

andre nickatina 11-12-07 03:35 PM

switched to clipless a week or two ago. i'm riding time atac's and liking them alot, no unexpected pullouts from skids and just enough float without being too much (by which i mean there's only a little). i'm not sure if i like these better than toshi doubles but they're definitely preferred over single straps. the thing about clipless is you can get more power from the 6-9 oclock pedal stroke compared to anything else where you're not clipped in.

wildturkey 11-12-07 03:57 PM

i go back and forth between clips/straps and clipless. when i have more than one bike i put clipless on my "exercise" bike that i use for long rides/training, and then clips/straps for my transportation/fun bike. clipless are far superior in performance, they make skidding/etc. easier, and if i was riding for exercise or in the hills, that's what i'd pick (i ride crank bros candy sl's). but in my opinion clips/straps are more convenient for general transportation, short rides, for if you get off and walk a lot, all for the obvious reason that you can wear any shoe.

wildturkey 11-12-07 04:00 PM

p.s. there is also the cost difference... my clipless pedals are about $100 plus the sidi dominators (over $200). but it's worth it and they last a long time (replacement cleats are about $20 for my pedals but i only replace about once a year).
my clips/straps are just MKS and probably come to $50-$60 total, not counting sambas or whatever that i'd have anyway.

schnee 11-12-07 04:12 PM

I like clipless, because tearing ligaments and tendons went out of style in the 80's.

doofo 11-12-07 04:14 PM

frankly i think that slip on vans look stupid as f*ck

and sidi dominators look cool as sh*t

Sidi Dominators just look like baseball cleats to me...
