gear ratios

I went to https://software.bareknucklebrigade.c...it.applet.html and read all the info but I'm trying to figure out (and I know it all depends on personal experience/strength) what most people are using and where the sweet spot is for good skidding/wheelieing(sp?)/trackstanding. I use 52/17 and I'm a big dude so I go really fast and it doesn't bother me, but its not especially easy to trackstand or skid.

Bikes: Nishiki Custom Sport (converted to fixed, 44/16)

Go to a parking lot for the duration of the hours 11:00pm till 4:30am six nights a week and do nothing but track stands and skids.

Try and make it an empty parking lot.

Shouldn't be any more difficult to trackstand on certain ratios than others. At least, it hasn't been in my experience. Skidding's another question, but like I said, practice. I run 82.1 gear inches, and can skid/trackstand just fine.

I started on 81 gear inches and learned to skid just fine.

you can skid with whatever gear, but the higher it is, the harder it'll be to slow it down (backpedal)...

i used to ride an 88-inch fixie (ouch, hills!) around sea-town, and when i went down to 75 inches it's sooo much easier to lock up dem pedals.

i'm riding 40x14 now fwiw.

I don't know, I ride 52x19, and I'm kind of a big guy, too. I thought about either gearing down (making skidding and trackstanding easier) or gearing up (because I have a slow-ish cadence; I max out at 120, mostly) so I can go faster. I haven't decided.

120 is a fairly high cadence, maybe not for a sprint, but for a racing speed, definitely.

For what it's worth, I ride at 44x17, which is around 68 gear inches. It's not as "spinny" as people make it out to be, but it definitely helps out on the hills, but even this masks the real reason I ride it - acceleration.
