Fixie project
Hi everyone,
Thought I'd post my work-in-progress fixie. Frame came from a local shop ($60, inc fork, headset and BB) and was painted in the most horrid red-rattlecan paint I've ever seen. I still don't know who made the frame but It's got break drillings front and rear but has a horizontal dropout which is a little strange. Not only was it ripe for a fixie build, it came with a 'fixed' seat post which needed removing.
The previous owner came up with ingenious plan of paining not only the whole bike that horrid red, but also the seat post, hence the movement deficiency. I managed to pull it out by a combination of a vice and a very large sledge hammer. NEXT.
(Thanks to the guys on the forums for the rattle can painting tips!!)
The under coat was junk and peeling so I stripped, sanded and polished the bejesus out of it, resprayed with automotive etch primer and let to set for 24hrs. I made a trip down to the local car paint shop $22 and a can of ultra-durable top coat later, I was set to spray.
Basically, I didn't want to have the top coat chip away on me later down the track so heres what I did:
- Four coats of etch primer, sanding between. Curing for 60 mins between.
- One coat of white gloss. my etch primer is grey and the yellow would look better on white.
- Three coats of the car paint. curing for 4h between, no sanding.
- Painted the striped areas, masking etc... Cure O/N.
- Detailed the lugs with a blue acrylic paint pen.
- Transferred the lettering and decals. (Found these little gems at a SCRAPBOOKING shop of all places!)
- Let everything cure for 24h
- 4 coats of acrylic clear coat. Let to cure O/N.
I know I got a little carried away, but if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right eh?
I've just ordered a crank-set and wheels from Benscycle.com which should be here in a couple of weeks - takes a long time for that hamster to carry things down under.
I'll post more pics when it's complete!!
Cheers,
Tim

Oh and the "light*speed" decal is a little joke we have in our riding group. - can't stand when the media mis-spells Litespeed. (my Tuscany is in the background of the photos!)

Good job. I'd be intersted to hear how the paint holds up. I've been thinking of repainting my ciocc.
