Complete Cannondale track bike on ebay:

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...TODAY.m238.lVI

Hell, I'd take that for double the price it's going for right now! Of course, I'm sure it will get to double its current price in the next few days...

I'm crying like a 4 year old who just caught mommie with Santa! If I had known THEN that kids would have paid top $ for old, second shelf race parts, and POS frames... I would have stocked up when I had the chance!!!

BTW, in 94 ALL track bikes came with race worthy parts. They were made for RACING.

so, i've talked to quite a few people who've really enjoyed those cannondale track frames from the early 90s. this is the first time i've heard a dissenting opinion. i'll keep it in mind. i *have* heard the term "crank-n-fail," but have never actually heard of cannondales actually cracking and failing under ordinary stress.

suntour superbe pro is old, second shelf race parts? hmmm. your loss, i guess. you can never tell what's going to be pricey and what is going to be cheap. NOS and even used SSP hubsets go for some big coin on eBay... meanwhile, i snatched up a couple of Zeus hubs for my bike. smooth as hell, and for a damn good price.

it is ammusing to me, though, that a decade or more after these bikes were released, they experience a sudden upswing in popularity. go figure.

that's way too much, considering Specialized S-works Langster framesets regularly go for between $300 and $600 on ebay

That's too much money for that frame. I bought one of those built up as a complete bike in 2000 for $650. It had all the original Suntour Superbe Pro components, tubular Sun rims and one heel of a custom paint job. I relaced the hubs to some NOS Campy rims , put 3tt track bars and a Salsa Cromoly stem and , since it is used maybe 10-15 times a year, still looks just like new. It is an awesome bike but that price is WAY too high.

Im not surprised, completely built up ones have gone for less than $800 this month alone. Up until the fall they werent selling for any more than $500 on eBay and a number of them were sold between $250 - $450 on local forums in blue, green, and polished.

That 'Dale seems reasonable to me actually. Especially if one is to use it on the track as a race bike. Sure, you can look around for similar quality frames and find some cheaper, and you'll also find many way more. That frame is going to be very stiff, and, again, it'll depend on what your plan is as to whether or not it is too expensive. For street use, I'd personally look for something else. You'll find much cheaper frames and they'll be more comfortable. But it's your money. If you want to pull the trigger, go for it. It is a very nice frame. Wish I had one.

If they are made with the same aluminum as the road bikes of the period (and they most likely are) they are most definitely not ****!! C-dale is know the world over for making arguably the best aluminum frames anywhere. (I am not speaking of components that came on the original bike.. only the frame)

Early 90 C-dales were *****. The shop I raced for couldn't GIVE the frames to the racers. Ask ANYONE who raced one when they were new. They rode like hell, cracked, broke...

This bike was mostly used as a rental/cat4 bike. I'm sorry if this p!sses on your day, but it's a fact of racing history.

Maybe in 15 years this will go for a mint.

I had the same model as the OP link. I purchased it new at the local dealer for 750 USD and that was quite much at the time (I think it was 1994), but I justified it mostly because I wanted to strip it of the Superbe Pro / DuraAce parts and tubular rims/tires. I sold the frame immedialty for 300 USD in the local paper and was really happy (read surprised) to get that much. It was a super stiff frame (good thing) with really big oversized aluminum tubes for the time, but overall nice and clean welds. Most importantly, it had real track geometry (i.e, 74/75ish degree seat and head tube angles).

I heard that some people had problems with the forks and rear track drops (being softer aluminum) but that's about it. I remember that they were also sized large.

Anyways, the parts went onto a local builders custom steel frame (known as Mercier) which I don't think are even around anymore. Then that got sold due to some life/time changes (had my first child).

It would be great to still own the Cannondale, because say what you want, but it is a sharp frame if you can get past it being made in aluminum.

Huh. I've always had this vague notion that Superbe Pro track components are paramount. And the Cannondale track frames have always been noted for their stiffness, at the very least. Both are highly regarded in the track community. I'd like to hear 11.4's thoughts on the matter.

Good day,
Under agreement I've been forced to conceal my identity as a CannondaleŽ representative. However, I feel compelled to risk my good standing and out myself to deliver this message. That particular model of SaecoŽ frame has been known to crack around the bottom bracket shell and rear chainstays leading to catastrophic failure and possibly grievous injury. If you forward me your details via PM we can arrange a trade-in program wherein I buy your frame for $200 and go over it with a jeweler's lens before sending it off to my employers.

Forever waiting,
Jimmy "Euphoria" James

^^^ A LOT of the C-dale stuff from the early 90s was known to break. ^^^ I love their new stuff.

Also, Suntour went belly up in the 90s. Most racers built bikes with Dura-Ace or Campy.

The CAAD8 & CAAD9 are really great frames. I ride a CAAD3, which is very light and very stiff, but it will beat you up on rides longer than 60 miles. Cannondale has really made improvements to the ride of their bikes while maintaining a really stiff frame.

The track frames look a lot like the old crit frames. If it had dropouts rather than track ends it would be worth $100 on a very good day.

I love my dad's late 80's/early 90's 'dale. I don't think it has a CAAD designation but that thing accelerates and still manages to give a smooth ride.

The 2007s weigh 18 lbs. with 105 and assy shimano wheels. Couldn't believe it until I took it down the street for a test-ride. The wind took off its bowler hat and bowed down.
