Rocket Rings

I've seen several posts recently about these Chainrings. They look like a saw blade but they are cheap as hell. What is the overall consensus on these chainrings. My bike came stock with a Truvativ Touro crankset and chainring and the chainring on it is horrible. It is so far out of true its unreal. I can look down at it while riding and watch the chainring pretty much wobble. But I saw on Amazon.com the rocket rings are like $13 and that can't be too bad of a deal to at least try. So if any of you all have them, do you like it? I may go ahead and get one till I can save up some more for a nice crankset and chainring.

I have a 43t that i got for something like 8 bucks shipped. I tossed it on and with about 5 mins of messing around with it got it to spin pretty round. Can't beat the price, though I do hate the extra set of holes. I think I'm going to mill it down some once my semester ends.

jdeane4 11-27-07 12:59 PM

Mill it down? Like cut the extra holes off? Would that do any technical damage to the ring?

Landgolier 11-27-07 01:00 PM

I've got about 2k miles on two different ones, I like the high teeth but I find they aren't made of a hard enough alloy, they deform at the base of the teeth. I say pop for the $25-30 Sugino or Salsa rigs, they're much higher quality and wear better as well.

edit: if your current ring wobbles, grab a big adjustable wrench and straighten that bad boy out. It's not that hard to do, and it doesn't have to be perfect.

It wobbles and I want a good cheap 47t chainring. Its hard to find a 47t chainring in 130bcd

I'm using the larger bcd pattern on the ring. All I would do it toss the ring on a rotary table on the mill and cut the inner BCD holes off.

I've been riding the Rocket Rings for years, get them at the BMX shop online called Dans Comp. You can't be them for the price. No complaints here.

Jenkinsal2 11-27-07 02:17 PM

As posted before the teeth on my ring deformed pretty quick but that could be because it is a conversion with a chainline that may not be perfect. If I were to do it again I would most likely get a slightly better quality one that would last longer.

jdeane4 11-27-07 02:20 PM

Well I just ordered mine and I am going to see how they feel. I just want a cheap replacement till I am able to afford an awesome crankset and chainring.

I have a 45T 1/8" rocket ring on my beater rain bike and I have no real problems with it. Its gone 2000+ miles in **** weather and is still going strong. It seems to work just as well as the $90 Sugino Zen chainring on my other bike.

lyledriver 11-27-07 04:01 PM

I had a rocket ring that I ordered from Sheldon that was machined improperly. Some teeth were nearly half the thickness of others. I should have returned it right away, but instead ran it and the narrow teeth wore really fast.

humancongereel 11-27-07 04:06 PM

the only two things i've ever heard bad about them are the above post and someone saying he thought they were total ****, though there was never any reason given.

the pope 11-27-07 04:15 PM

I have a couple - thumbs up on both. And I think the extra holes look *****in.

c0urt 11-27-07 04:56 PM

running a 40t rocket ring. it is ok
was loud at first, but once i got it sorted out near silent.

dubstylee 11-27-07 06:07 PM

Got lots of miles on mine. It's way more true laterally than my Ultegra ring on my cyclocross bike, but kinda sucks radially.

wroomwroomoops 11-27-07 06:32 PM

I have a couple Rocket rings. I don't use them because of the experience I had with the first one: teeth deformed at the base after only 2000 miles.

mentat6059 11-27-07 10:48 PM

spend your money on a good quality ring. I've had a TA specialities zircal ring for 3 years (around 35,000km) and it still shows nearly no sign of wear

jdeane4 11-27-07 11:36 PM

Anybody got any pictures of their rocket ring on their bike?

looking at those pics, i just realized i lost my top tube pad

jdeane4 11-27-07 11:56 PM

Are those the bulletproof cranks? How do you like that setup? What kind of bb are you using?

c0urt 11-28-07 12:27 AM

still cant find my top tube pad.

yeah those are 170mm bullet proof cranks, the ring is on the inner spider, and it is so tight i couldnt run a larger ring if i wanted to.

it took me a bit to sort out creaking chainring bolts, but i dont mind the combo at all. it isnt as pretty as some of those out there, but i cant see then when i am on the bike anyway.

the bike has a italian bb shell, so it is an odd size, but i cant remember which bb is in there right now. it was cheap as hell, and on my next bike i intend to go with a nicer one, but since this one was built on a budget.

jdeane4 11-28-07 12:36 AM

Man, I was just searching velospace and some black bulletproof cranks w/ a black rocket ring looks pretty slick. I think instead of dropping $200 on high end cranks, I may just go ahead and get some bulletproof cranks. Are your bulletproofs pretty stiff and strong?

c0urt 11-28-07 12:47 AM

strong yes. stiff eh. some people have mixed feelings on them, they are stiff enough for me and i have used them a 900 pound bike with no issues.

I skid and slid and do all sorts of dumb stuff on mine with no qualms at all.

Jenkinsal2 11-28-07 01:08 AM

I love my bulletproof cranks. They are cheap and strong and dont really look to bad. The only downside I could think of would be that they are 110bcd which narrows your choice of chainrings.

jdeane4 11-28-07 01:10 AM

110bcd does narrow it, but if you use the rocket ring and just get a new one every so often, your good to go. Hell, the rocket ring isnt more than $15.

Landgolier 11-28-07 01:23 AM

There are a million chainrings out there in 110 and 130, many for under $30. Skip the rocket rings and get something decent. 47t is hard to find, but you don't need it, you'll be fine with 8 skid patches I promise.

jdeane4 11-28-07 08:45 AM

What other chainrings do you all recommend at either 110 or 130?

eXCeSS 11-28-07 09:14 AM

rocketring/bulletproof also

jdeane4 11-28-07 09:16 AM

^I saw your bike on VeloSpace. That bike looks really nice. I bought the same black chainring. I think I may go ahead and get some bulletproof cranks later this week when I head back up to Atlanta.
