Dahon Boardwalk S1 - Gearing Down??
Hello. New here. I have a question for anyone who can help me out. i already posted this in the folder forum, but someone suggested i try here as well.
Basically I got a Boardwalk S1 for my girlfriend, and was wondering if it is possible to gear it down to make it easier for her to climb hills.
i own a Brompton S2L (2-gear) and geared it down, by switching out the 54T chainring with a 44T. is something like this possible to do with the S1?
on my brompton, the original gear sizes were something like 74" high and 56" low, then after the mod it was 60" high and 45" low. which is perfect for me.
as for my girlfriend, when she rides my brompton, she can only ride it with the lowest gear at 45" so i am looking to re-gear her S1 to around this size (45" - 50"). i believe with the stock gearing the S1 is over 60"
any suggestions?

calculate gearing here: https://software.bareknucklebrigade.c...it.applet.html
note the wheel size is 20x1.5.. chain chainring/freewheel accordingly

You should have quite a bit of room to go smaller on the chainring.
What do you think of the overall quality of the S1? I've often considered getting one to play around with myself.

It uses a 14t metric freewheel on the back, you could get a 16t metric freewheel and get the same gear drop you would get from something like a 39t or 38t chainring up front. The chainring looks like a normal 110 pattern with some weird chainguard, I can't find a high res pic where I can really see it. You could also go to a smaller chainring of course, down to a 34t or maybe a 33 if you can find one.

edit: wait, I was wrong, this thing has a coaster brake. Just go to a local bike shop and get a 16t or 18t coaster hub cog, should be like $10. You might need a new chain as well as it will need to be a little longer.

you could also get a few links added to the chain if its still pretty new.. no sense in wasting a perfectly good chain. Almost any shop should have a cog for you, and with a coaster hub they are held on by a c clip. very easy to put on/take off.
