So, a guy I know has one LeVel rear hub in like new condition that he will sell for $50, is that worth it? I saw online that they go for around $180. The only thing is I hear they are really heavy and don't they take a special cog?

speaking of level hubs, anyone know where you can get a 1/8" cog for these crazy things?

i am about due for a new one and would like to size up my drivetrain from 3/32 to 1/8.

If you can't locate one, just run a 1/8" chain on the 3/32 cog, it works fine.

That's one inconvenience of the Level hubs. A new sprocket will cost you almost as that second hand hub (if you get it), and that is if the Level guys feel like selling you one. And don't be so sure you'll end up buying the sprocket you rally want. If Level doesn't make 1(8" sprockets, you will pretty much never have one.

My bad guys, another friend actually gave me the wrong info. The guy with the hub only has a front LeVel hub that he is willing to part with for $30. Should I still do it?

I have no idea what kind of bearings and materials Level uses in their hubs. Their front hubs are in no way different from any other front hub, eccept for manufacturing quality. Presumibly they make very good stuff in general, so I would say that $30 for a front Level hub is a good idea. You are not forced to pay $56 for a sprocket.

That thing looks like it weighs a ton and cheap, good and light front hubs are available.

Well, I don't mind 150g of difference, especially in the hub. But I agree that there are very good and ligher front hubs,even at $30 (the cheaper Shimano hubs are great).

What worries me most about Level is not so much that a sprocket costs you more than $50 and you have no second source, no, what worries me about them is that they have this whole amateurish, we-are-gonna-close-shop-any-day-now look about them. And that's not because Level has so many products.

Reed and Scott are real people, mange. They work very hard getting their products out there in the world and have been very dedicated and consistent over the past three plus years at building this business from what is, at least to me, an intriguing new design idea. If you are buying hubs, talk to them. If you are looking for a web designer, well I suggest you go elsewhere, but you already know that....

Sure. And now they seem to be into submarine robots. I admit, robotics seems a much more interesting activity than fabricating hubs and developing accessories for them. No wonder neither the Level disk rotor nor their freewheel solution got anywhere from the design board. You say they work very hard to get their products out there? The only thing that showed any development at all on their website, is that undersea robot project, so I conclude that the hub business is on the way out. There's only so much two people can do. And if two people can't do or won't do something, well, it won't get done. For those who invested in their hubs, it may be time to buy up those inexpensive sprockets to make for a lifetime supply.

Lesson: it's always a good idea to avoid proprietary solutions.
