new snow question

I run both...my fixed gear commuter runs a studded front tire and a semi slick in the rear while my cross/ commuter runs cyclocross tires which I am still looking to test.
I work in a bike shop that serves commuters and folks ride on nearly everything although for ice, studs are the best way to go.
Building your own studded tires isn't that hard to do with simple tools and easy to acquire materials and doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.
My studded tires (homebuilt) are going into their second season and are looking and working great... the roads have been bad enough of late that I have pondered running the rear stud too.
