Nipple Length

I'm building up a set of deep-v's. Does anyone know if I can use the normal 12mm nipple or do I need 16mm?

normal is fine, the seat is at the bottom of the v. it's a bit of a trick getting them in there, and you'll probably lose one or two in the rim which you can either shake out or leave in for fun sound effects. i use a toothpick to guide it in. a spoke also works.

I don't quite get it... what's the purpose for longer nipples? My experience is that they do not seem to have more threads.

And, with deep rims you'll just have to use an old (or new) spoke to put them nipples in from ouside of the rim. Still have to do this with longer ones.

With standard nipples and deep rims you often have only the very end of the nipple exposed, making it prone to rounding off while truing it.

That is a very illuminating photo Soil Sampler, thanks. I like the longer nipples more already.
