Alien Bikes stuff?

I tried the search, saw some people had good things to say about the wheelset. But I've been eyeing the black crankset and bottom bracket. Anybody here have any experience?

tl; dr; SEARCH!

bonechilling 12-05-07 09:14 PM

Same old Taiwanese stuff with a different name. Cranks are Andel, hubs are Novatec, frames are Maxway.

There's another glowing "review" of Alien stuff on FGG now.

Andel's are more matte black though. Aliens are cheaper. I want matte!!

dddave 12-06-07 03:31 AM

i still want one of the wheelsets.

oneredstar 12-06-07 05:08 AM

There is alonther thread exactly like this one somewhere. I have to go pick my wheels and cranks up from the post office tomorrow. I will let you know what I think when I get them and put them on my bike.

I was thinking the same thing; these appear to be glossy black, although otherwise look identical to the Andels...

dewthedew 12-06-07 08:12 AM

i got the wheelset off ebay for $140 and im lovin it

asherlighn 12-06-07 11:24 AM

Im kinda eyeing their frames. Think I might pick one of those up when they are finally available.

Landgolier 12-06-07 11:35 AM

I wish I'd come up with the idea to sell a bunch of generic parts in black with a random name.

I like companies like Alien and IRO. Kinda no frills bikes and components that dont cost an arm and a leg. And not all kids of stupid graphics and what not.

I'm really anxious to hear more about their frame, since it is definitely one I would be interested in. I would just want to get it drilled for a brake...

Yeah, I would want a brake too. But thats all of like 20 minutes of work, so not a huge concern.

Maybe polishing off the paint from the lugs and painting them a different color too. That would be neat. Like match their color to rims and bartape. :)

NitroPye 12-06-07 12:44 PM

I have the wheelset, and cranks. All running smooth after about 3 weeks of riding.

They are pretty much the same as the IRO's the difference though is in the bolt pattern 130 on the IRO and 144 on the alien... that is what is holding me up from buying one or the other, I cant make up my damn mind. I'm probably getting a jamie roy though so i'll probably just go with the IRO so i can have them just smacked on and shipped with my frame.

My only question is about the chainring that comes on the IRO, the one on the alien is a 1/8" but the IRO doesnt have it listed, has anyone gotten one from them? Anyone?

guitarded616 12-06-07 06:19 PM

chainring on an iro is 3/32. so are the iro chains and cogs.

I have them. They are sick. They feel great and look damn perty. I just put them on like a week ago and combined with a new Izumi chain I have a practically silent drive train now. And my q factor is that of gods.

Plus the price is great.

I have the wheels and crank... BUT my drive train is a tad noisey. (Still 100% quieter then my mountain bike with "silent clutch" quiet freewheel though)

What factors into a quiet drive train. Everything looks straight but I hear some noise on the back... how can I tell what needs to be spaced out?

time bandit 12-08-07 12:32 AM

^sometimes your combinations off chainring/cog/chain just makes a little noise. as long as you know everything is good and lubed and straight, just rock it. no worries.

btw, my 10 dollar surly 17t cog is much quieter than my 20 dollar eai cog. go figure!

nisfornike 12-08-07 02:43 AM

hmm who's tried alien's pedals? they look pretty unique...

dddave 12-08-07 03:24 AM

the pedals look super ****ty, like the stock kilo tt ones.

i still want one of these wheelsets.

jodypolk 12-08-07 03:57 AM

the fact that they're called alien, and http://alienbikes.com/alien_logo_black_small.gif is their logo ensures i'll never buy anything from them.

time bandit 12-08-07 04:04 AM

^thankyou. i still will not buy from this "oh man, i just made this bike company and i threw FGG a whole bunch of money and free parts to review me?" company. Just go sugino/weinmann. same *****.

same ****, same price though. To me it all came down to customer service. I ordered the wheels from there and things were great. I had a slight problem and it was fixed in a jiffy. So when it came to cranks I knew I wanted that crank that everyone is selling with their own logo on it so I decided to buy from Alien because the wheel purchase went so smoothly.

oneredstar 12-16-07 02:51 PM

Alright, I have had the cranks for about 10 days now and love them. The only thing that sucks it that they are on my summer bike and we have too much snow to ride it now. From the riding I have done indoors they are awesome.

cool thing about those frames, I e-mailed them and Joe over there said they would custom powder coat in almost any color as well as have an option to ship the frame bare so someone could polish or paint it themselves. Looks like an interesting frame with some great lugwork I'm keeping my options open for sure. Also he said shipping to CA is around $30 so it shouldn't cost too much to get one either. Just thought I'd share the love.

whatever, at least it's not alienation bmx.

^ ^ ^

i do like the fact that they keep their product branding to a minimum. of all of their products, only the hubs have a logo on it (from what i can tell from the website).
