So... here's mine. Berthoud fenders.

So beautiful.

Kemmer - I'll install your fenders properly in exchange for a few rolls of that.

They get clogged with snow, so I have them like that so I can get my hand in to clear them out if I need to.

I got the tape from a BF member a while back in the "pay it forward" thread. Best $0 I ever spent.

Practicality over aesthetics, eh?

Hmm...

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but does anyone run a full front fender with an Ultegra front brake? I'm looking at it, and I don't know if I could squeeze one in there.

I really doubt that there's a fender this narrow. I think you'd have to split the fender, like the previous post did with his Kilo TT.

raster 12-25-07 07:33 PM

Oh man, I didn't even notice that when I looked at that picture. Freakin' great idea.

Devolution 12-25-07 07:41 PM

This is the best thread ever.

On fitting the fender through the front brakes - splitting works as shown here, but I've also had success with just carving out the space in the fender itself with a dremel so it fits around the brake. Be sure to check clearances with the brake squeezed as well.

dynamo..
speaking of toe overlap... when i first installed these, the front fender supports were clipping my toeclips if i turned the wheel at all, so i got out a powertool and sawed them down... no more toe bumping!

(also ended up using the saw to shorten the mounting bolts since i didnt have threaded holes to mount onto...)

the day after i installed them it was wet out and i was dry. instantly made it totally worth it! (buying and installing.) I love having fenders.. i dont care if it's more cluttered looking.

kpug505 12-26-07 07:13 PM

Mine (the green one) and the g-friends (the grayish dirty one). Both fenders are unknown brands from my junk pile. The grey ones fenders are shiny aluminum though. Much better then my crappy plastic ones.

Cool idea, but why use p clamps when you have fender eyelets on the frame?

What frame is that by the way? Jamie Roy?

I don't use the eyelets as I use a rack in the summer to avoid wearing a back pack when it's hot. The frame is an on-one inbred.

Side note: I can't see knogs from a distance for sh**. I demonstrated by riding my coworker's bike down the block and having him look for me/his knog light on the return -- He bought a new light the next day.:o Nice bikes though.

One mtb clip on fender + downtube mtb crudcatcher in the back, and another one meant for the rear but kludged up front. (install a starnut just inside the bottom of the steer tube, fender gets bolted to that.) The rear is attached with one bolt into the threaded boss on the underside of the rear wishbone, and the two rubber straps you can see on the downtube. Not as nice as some of the full on jobs, but very easily removed and reinstalled. The front also now has a good chunk of milk jug plastic doing duty as a lower flap. Also sports a seatpost mounted rack for grocery getting and summer time non-sweaty back commuting.

So, I have an undrilled front fork and not a lot of clearance between front wheel and frame. What can I use?

I have successfully melted down two Esge P35's to fit under Tiagra brake calipers, which ought to be about the same reach and shape as Ultegra. After marking where the interference was happening with a felt pen, I used a soldering iron to reshape the fenders and to remove some material. Because the fenders have a foil core, they were very stable and easy to work with like this. The resulting product fits under my caliper just fine with no contact whatsoever (although note that I also modded the fender's fork crown mount for better clearance). And unlike setups with holes cut in the fenders, it won't allow water to get up in my head tube. If anyone axes I'll take a few pics and post them up.

The bottom line with fenders, I've found, is that because individual bikes have so many weird idiosyncrasies, often you can really benefit from imaginative modding.

Planet Bike Fenders on 27x1.25 wheels/tires. A bit of grinding needed to raise them off the tires enough at the brake bolts. Maybe that's why PB doesn't advertise that these fit a 27" tire???? Anyway...they work.... I know....a sh*tty picture....

They are just for added side visibility at close range for the A-holes that love to sneek out of the intersection. She's got a "guppie" blinky up front and a blinding halogen that looks like a cars high beam. Out back is a Super Flash. I would agree that the Knogs are no good for a real light up front. Thanks for the compliment on the bikes!

You're basically stuck with a Raceblade-type solution. Not ideal, but better than nothing.

Interesting rig.........what rack is that on front? Love the fenders. I almost want to ask about the tires but.............do they come in different colors?

Rack is a Paul Flatbed. Fenders are Woodies. Tires were scored from a friend who bought a stack of them on the Performance closeout table. They are Panaracer but I don't think they are made anymore. Luckily I have a spare set so I should be OK for a while.

Just wanted to show off my p-clip and zip-tie McGuyvering. This is the same Trek 660 as shown a few pages up, after a trip to the powder coater's:

P-clips on the fork

P-clips on the seat stay

Zip-ties at the rear brake bridge

It was a bit of work, but well worth it.

I make clear fenders out of 0.060 vacuum formed polycarb at work, and use spokes or aluminum rod for the stays, I like the aluminum for the stays a little better because I can scotch brite the rod, and spray on some matte clear, and they stay nice and brushed looking.

It's been raining alot here lately, so I gave my set to a friend who has no car, she just bikes it to work (she's pretty hot too)

Anyway we just got a new centrifugal forming machine in last week and fenders would be PERFECT for "orientation/set-up" (good thing my boss knows I do this ****) I will fab some up, and take pics once I install em.

The first time I made a set I used some camera lighting clasps so you could install and remove the fenders without tools,...those got stolen the first week, so now I use nyloc nuts, but I might even use torx fasteners for more thief resistance.
The front fender attatches to the back stub of my brake bolt, and the rear to the rear brake hole, and the fender eyelets on the dropouts.

I like the way they look because you can hardly see them until you get close, or until they get all muddy and greasy, but even then they look pretty cool, they are easy to remove and wash, the polycarb is nearly indestructable and they weigh next to nothing.

Pix coming monday/tuesday
