Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? What are those little illustrations on your downtube? They look really interesting.

More pics of the fix, taken at my friend's birthday party. Pic #1 is them telling me "look like you're riding it." (and my drunken impersonation of myself riding it.) Pic #2 is earlier in the evening, how I was forced to lock it up, since the bottom 5 feet of the posts on that street were all too thick to fit my U-Lock around. No respect, I know.

here are a couple of shots of my lastest project. my daily commuter, fixed bum style for the 5 mile round trip ride. it's great fun. vintage sear's (made in austria) black frame with random pieces from a few thrift store finds. check out the space invader in the background, believe it's a fake of the real invader

It totally didn't go. I did, however ride the bike for the MS 150. It was 100+ miles the first day, and 75+ the second. I pulled both of my achilles tendons, so I rode about 50 miles in excruciating pain. It was fun, though.

That's totally my bike. My friend, Matt, pointed out that someone was lusting after it.

It now has an FSA chainring, Chris King headset, and a more comfortable stem.

I would almost consider selling it... if the right buyer came along. This is definitely not a street bike.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot.... Don't be jealous but don't be surprised if I run you over. I'm fully loaded with the hammer down.

Seriously though, that thing is kind of a B to haul six miles through stop-and-go traffic on a 77" wheel. With gears or without the stopping it would be fine, but winding back up to speed got to be some work. I can't wait to get my monster quads.

I commend guys who rock the trailer on the track bikes. true utilitarian style, regardless of the ride.
I saw some guy here in berkeley on a gorgeous vintage Masi... trackstanding at a light... with a trailer full of stuff. it was pretty rad.

I feel that the Merckx ST angle is a little slack for that Colnago, but damn that HT may make up for it.

Yeah, but i f I'm working to pull it empty, I can only imagine that loaded it will suck the big one. My mountain bike is geared low enough to make it work single speed, but that has the knobbies. I expect most of shopping with the trailer will be done with the shifty.

Still, you do feel like a numbnuts badass rolling around with a trailer hooked to a track bike. Man, I can't imagine running no brakes + trailer. Hell, I can't imagine actually having a load in there if I only had the front (another reason not to use my fixes as cargo pullers). I'd be afraid of bending the forks.

I took my son (~22 lbs.) out in the Burley on my fixed-gear and it wasn't too bad; I switched out the 52-tooth ring for a 48 (that's with 18 in the back and 170 mm cranks), and it was slow-but-steady rolling. We were in Hopkinton State Park (in Hopkinton, Mass.), which has some steepish-but-short hills, and the climbs were not the most fun thing I ever did, but not terrible. Slowing down with front brake only was no big deal - I just made sure not to let it get going too too fast on the downhills.

Of course, a geared bike with two brakes would make more sense, but feeling like a numbnuts badass is important, especially when it comes to setting an example for the youngster.
