Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

i think that they're wonderful. it's my personal opinion that if it weren't due to contemporary (emphasis on temporary) fashion leaning towards tiny, narrow, terrible saddles, that more people would be riding sprung brooks saddles.

mine is the b.67, hers is the champion flyer S (ladies) model. we bought them for a 750ish mile (fixed) tour, and they did wonderfully. the b.67 is significantly wider, and also comes with slightly thinner leather (as per the b.17s thinner leather versus the b.17 champion special's slightly thicker stuff) and that helps it feel great right off the bat, and break in quicker than most.

post-tour i've kept the saddle on for all kinds of riding and couldn't be happier about it. as long as your handlebars are reasonably high, you shouldn't have any problem. the springs are just right. enough to take the edge off bumps, but firm enough that you don't lose any power from the squish.

after riding the b.67 for a month straight, my b.17 champion special felt pretty bad. that should say a lot.

There is no doubt about that...I am putting one on.

I had 3 calipers here, and they either didn't reach (due to the fork being a 27" and the wheel is 700) or the bolt was too short because it isn't drilled for recessed. I will be riding my other bike to the shop tomorrow.

My ride today was only on side streets without much traffic just to get a feel for fixed. It'll be a little while until i head out onto Damen or other main street, even with a bike lane with this bike...let alone any street without.

I posted a photo of this bike last fall just before it's first ride. Here is how it looks today after about 500 miles worth of saddle and bar adjustment. Also added some Planet Bike yellow fenders for riding in the winter, a water bottle cage and a pair of Oury grips.

there are some more photos on my PBASE GALLERY

specs:
custom Bike Friday Pocket Rocket w/ rear track dropouts (130 rear spacing)
Phil LF track hubs laced to Alex R390 rims
Sugino 75 cranks on Phil BB
KMC kool chain
eggbeater pedals
King headset
Kalloy seatpost (will replace with a Thompson elite when my shim arrives)
Old cut-down Brooks saddle
Dimension stem (will be replaced when I find something I like better)
My favorite chop'n'flop hbars
super-light old Dia-Compe brake lever
Tektro (shimano 105 knockoff) front brake. (will probably replace when I care more.)

I had it sized off of my 61cm Masi 3V, and I must say that the ride is remarkably similar...may even sell the Masi now. Weight (w/o tool bag, pump, water bottle) is a hair under 20#)

My first fixed that started it all in the front(Nishiki); my latest fixed fixation in the back(Mark V, ever heard of it?).
