Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Actually, I don't really know exactly why. But if you look at old velocipedes, thats how you mounted up. You sorta' ran with it, and hopped up by using a peg or step on or near the back wheel. Probably a hold over from that design. (Until someone figured out they could just make the bike smaller.)

I finally switched over to fixed from single speed this weekend and love it. Installed a new front brake (just a Shimano 105) and some Oval bullhorns. I went from a 48/18 single to a 48/16 fixed and didn't even notice a difference, I suppose due to the more efficient way fixed gears work? Anyway, no complaints, haven't fallen over-- just haven't tried any of that skipping/skidding stuff since I again, don't want to fall on my ass just yet, and all the weary people about my SPD set-up...

Here's a pic.

Is that top tube protector just foam with electrical tape? And does your conversion really not have a rear brake hole?

I'm guessing that peace sticker is over the brake hole.

I looked at that as a possibility, but the sticker looked too smooth and small to be actually be covering it. You're probably right, however.

yep, that top tube protector is just some pipe insulator wrapped in electrical tape... it works! oh and yeah, that sticker is covering the brake hole. i'm looking for another cool one to cover the hole in the fork.

I saw that too; it was crooked, and I fixed it.

Nope...but it's sure feels like it...it's at my brother's house up in Lathrop. Plenty of new developments going on and the open road space is great for sprints and doing some laps.
