Cliffs notes: Replace the axle.

Does your hub run sealed bearings or loose ball?

You've got to switch out the axle.

It's not too difficult a task. Just involves removing some nuts and aligning the new axle properly. You sort of have to have cone wrenches.

If you are afraid of switching axles (it can be a little overwhelming if you don't have someone to guide you), most bike stores sell quick release-style axles with allen bolts. So someone would be less likely to steal your wheel.

All I ever needed to swap out axles was a pair of 6" crescent wrenches.

Bikes: yes

okay. if you're changing from a quick release skewer to a bolt-on skewer, you do *not* need to change axles. you just need to buy a bolt on skewer, and shove it through the (already) hollow axle.

however, if you want to use tracknuts, then you'll need a new, longer, solid axle.
