those hubs are intense looking
|
Too intense for the street perhaps. But definitely my favorite looking hubs ever, after Sherrif Stars...

those wheels are nice. i had my hands on a pair - they were Tracklocross/Harlemegeddon prizes, won by Andrew (who also took VeloCity and Rumble this year!). Smooth sealed bearing hubs with tough looking hardware. I wouldn't mind riding a set.

I love my hubs! http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2183/...64dba592_b.jpgLaced to Velocity Dyads with Wheelsmith double butted. Strong, fast, and good looking. And a little dusty. |
I bought a set ob Black Gran Compe hubs from Business Cycles, but when they arrived, the Front hub spun in-hand a little sticky (rear was fine). The LBS mechanic broke the hub down, and confirmed that these hubs are issued with entry-level bearing cartridge set. I had him build anyway, with the option to upgrade cartridge if it got trashed. As a built wheelset, that both hubs have spun fast and smooth from the first turn. Perhaps it was the weight of the spokes/rims. I can flip the bike and get a hand-spin that lasts .... 2 minutes 45 seconds, according to the trusty G-Shock. This is after 6 months of hard city commuting/riding/racing on rough roads and off curbs.

Stock hubs usually need cone adjustment.

I realize that this thread is old, however this is driving me crazy and I must reply!!!
I have gran compe hubs, as well as formula hubs. These hubs are formula hubs. They have the exact same shell, and identical in shape and forging. They even have the same engraving near the holes. The difference is that Gran Compe hubs have a stainless axle, maybe (I'm not certain) better bearings, and very nice anodized finish. The bearings on my hubs have a black seal, and the bearing on my formula hubs have a orange-ish red seal. No more arguing, I am certain they are made by formula (a high end offering by formula), and sold under the gran compe name. |
Formula hubs get rebadge and rebadge and rebadge to many many different hubs, I'm not surprised that Gran Compe's are Formula. That model of Formula hubs are the same as the IRO version, very nicely made hubs. Also, Formula are known to use both black seal and orange seal bearings but not sure which is better.

i have a dura ace to deep v next to me, and its going on craigslist. seriously, theres no noticeable difference on the street compared to a standard formula.
unrelated, sorry. |

Aren't formula rear hubs a bit cheaper than 40 bucks in the first place?

Wow Harsh cc700 if must be hard for you to live in Seattle with that kind of reactionary attitude...
I resurrected this thread because I was looking at the hubs I have and the Hub prices for my project... no they are not for sale if they were they would be posted in the correct area you might also notice a yellow jersey I know where to post em for sale or trade Scrodzilla you are not included in this chiding... |
I followed This discussion for some time now and i couldn't believe The Gran Compe hubs were actually Formula's. I've had both. The Formula's Died within 3 months. Bad Threading, my lock ring and cog came of while skidding. the Gran Compes hubs feel way better. So i sent Dia Compe an email. This is the answer they gave me:
Hi Arthur , Gran Compe hub are not formulas hub, Gran compe hub quality are better than Formula. thanks Mike Lin Dia-Compe Taiwan Looks like some sort of indoctrination to me. "We are the best company and we hate formula blablabla". But in my opinion they make better hubs and i do trust them, when they say formula hubs are not the same as Gran Compes. It seemed he even felt offended that i dared to ask him. So I hope we can end this discussion once and for all. |
i'm pretty sure installation and stress cycling(use and type of use and frequency of use) has WAY more to do with stripping than whether it's a formula or a diacompe.
i've had dimension, formula, iro, origin 8, dura ace and suntour. the only hub i've ever stripped was a low flange dura ace. it was also the oldest and most used of any hub i've had. it's fine if they're not formulas but just because you asked him if they were the same hubs(obviously he's not going to tell you they are formulas) doesn't mean they're higher quality. |
Gran Compe hubs are definitely not Formulas. In my experience handling both, the GCs are of nicer overall quality, have nicer hardware and generally seem a little more well-made.
