Thoughts on the Dia Compe Gran Compe Hubs

I tried to do a search on these and found nothing but a thread of people trying to argue whether they were a formula knockoff or Suzue Promax knockoffs. Anyone ride the Gran Compe hubs by Dia Compe? I saw some in a shop the other day and the looked fairly nice. They spin pretty smooth too. Just wondering if anyone here uses them.

if i were building a new set of wheels with all new stuff, i'd pick these, hands down. from what i've seen on other people's bikes, they're really nice quality, and last well. definitely not a necessary upgrade from something like formulas, but available if you want a little bit more bling.

however, i rarely buy new parts. so i doubt i'll have a wheelset with these hubs anytime soon.

IROeunuch 12-18-07 10:39 AM

They are similar to suzue promax SB but they have double fix.

I ride them and they have been solid with no problems so far with little to no care/maintanence.

Keep in mind I have no real comparisons for ride quality though.

I just built up a pair of wheels with them. The rest of the bike isn't finished so I haven't rode on them yet. I'll try and post a couple pics later of the wheels

i love 'em. i built my girlfriend up a set laced to fusions last winter.
i'm considering stealing them from her and watching her cry.

i'm still 99.99999999% certain they are the same hub shells as formula with no cutouts and better hardware.

visitordesign 12-18-07 03:32 PM

no. they're totally different shells than formulas. the spindle is much thinner.

crushkilldstroy 12-18-07 03:36 PM

Please please please don't start this again.

They look like super nice hubs. I wouldn't turn them down, but I also don't really see the point in upgrading from Formulas.

visitordesign 12-18-07 03:41 PM

he's just asking if anyone uses them.
he's not asking if crushkilldstroy would upgrade from formulas.

nobody cares.

I'd definitely use these for my next build. Formula's are great and I've ran them almost a year with zero problems but sometimes you need a change :) I've heard nothing but good things so far about them too. A friend has them and they are holding up well.

Trons, they look a lot more like Dura Ace/Suzue/Suntour than they do Formula w/o holes, IMO.

trons 12-18-07 04:25 PM

no, the ridge along the spoke holes gives it away.

andre nickatina 12-18-07 04:33 PM

that's a sharp eye you got there.

na975 12-18-07 04:36 PM

there's some pink ones on ebay.

na975 12-18-07 04:39 PM

i thought about buying them, but decided to go with the new duplex miche hub cause i really like them..

Goddamn. Did you accidentally slam your dick in the car door again or something? Settle down!

sefb222 12-18-07 06:58 PM

i have a set of the blue ones, laced to velocity aeros... love em, and they spin a lot more freely than any of the dura ace hubs i own.

I havent used them but theyre easily the most ridden hub in Tokyo. Damn near every bike you see has these or Dura Ace.
As Ceya pointed out at one time, these hubs are made off of the design of Suzue/Sansin/Suntour/Sunshine NJS hubs. Which were all basically the same hub.
Ive compared a set of these with my Sansin NJS hubs and they really identical except for the fact that the GranCompes are sealed and come in about 7 wacky colors. :)
If anyone thought theyre were like Formula hub then theyve probably not held a set before.

nateintokyo 12-18-07 08:07 PM

yep, all over Tokyo.
yep, tons of colors.
nope, never heard anything bad about them.

Makes sense too seing as Dia Compe and Suntour were affiliated back in the day. Dia Compe made the brakes for the Suntour groups...

jdeane4 12-18-07 11:40 PM

Next question: Between the Gran Compe hubs or the Miche Primato hubs, which would you choose? Discuss :)

deathhare 12-18-07 11:47 PM

Gran Compe here

andre nickatina 12-19-07 01:49 AM

Gran Compe. I've heard both good and bad about Miche but only good about Gran.

TehK 12-19-07 01:58 AM

Can you pick these up stateside? If so, where?
