Sugino RD High Polish Crank from Velo Orange for $100

Is the Sugino RD High Polish Crank from velo-orange.com a piece of crap?

Anyone use one?

They sure are purdy.

I currently have a black Cyclone crank on my bike and I want to change over to silver without spending too much money.

Is it worth it at $100, or should I look elsewhere (regular Sugino RD or 75, etc.)?

Unfortunately, they're out of stock right now, but that's not really a big deal since I'm not in a huge hurry.

why pay $25 more?

EDIT: I just noticed they have that on the Velo Orange website.
You're willing to pay $25 more for the old logo?

Why pay $37 more?

Umm, I guess because they aren't exactly the same thing. The one you linked to and the one I linked to here isn't finished as nicely, has the newer logo (I happen to like the older logo), and comes with a 48t ring, not a 46t like the one I linked to originally.

Many people use the RDs and I'm sure they are a very good crankset. The only reason I would hesitate to recommend them is the recent confusion over the chainline spec. I'm not sure anyone really knows what length spindle they are designed for.

OTOH, if you have more time than money, you could always strip and polish your black cranks, via this method. I managed to successfully polish a set of 75s that way.

The ring on the Velo-Orange set looks to be a nicer quality as well...but at $100 you're quickly approaching the Sugino 75 cost...I'd spend up for the stiffest, best quality track BCD crankset bar the Mighty. Just saying. If high polish is a real desire then the VO set looks top notch. The logo will polish off by the way.

A bench grinder with a polishing wheel beats the hell out of hand polishing any day! Good link and yes it's possible but...SHEESH!!!

yeah, i guess chainline was my main concern since the rd cranks have quite a bit of uncertainty floating around about that issue. i just wasn't sure if the ones that velo orange is selling have the same issues, or not.

that refinishing turned out really great, thanks for the link. do you know how durable it is? it seems like it would get trashed/scraped pretty easily. if not, i just might do that.

VO rocks. They have good shipping rates too. Maybe not the cheapest out there for everything but if they have other stuff you want you may end up saving $$ in the long run. They do have some excellent deals on other parts and things you won't find anywhere else.

Polished aluminum will last quite a while...just keep polishing it when it gets dull. My last cranks were polished (my way...cotton wheel on a bench grinder) 3 years ago and this winter I will re-polish them but could let them go another year easily.

im pretty sure the recomended spindle length for the RDs is 103mm.

the cheapest i've come across for a sugino 75 crankset was $198 in 170mm with a 49t from bikeisland.com

have a link for anywhere selling for less?

no just watch ebay...if you're going to polish them anyway look for older ones with the ano worn off from strap rub...they will sand and polish out nicely and you'll win the auction for peanuts since they're ugly.

well, i think i'd consider polishing/stripping the black crankset i have now but i don't think i would want to attack any cranks that i might buy now. that is, i would buy what i want, not necessarily what i would eventually want.

Anyone in Portland looking for well used NJS 75s + NJS 49t ring? I know I posted this before but no one mentioned their location. I would prefer not to ship. I am actually thinking of going with the RD crank. I would probably charge a pretty penny but they are meant to last so...PM me again if you live in Portland as I will be there for most of the day tomorrow.

Can you polish by hand or do you need a polishing wheel?

A polishing wheel would be easier, but if you're anything like me, you've been practicing to hand-polish cranks for years.

i really Like my Sugino RD's They have been quite good so far, seem to be quite stiff, but gett a good chainring the one that came on my khs flite, is totally mashed after one season, allthough i rode the snot out of it and keep my chain tight all ways. But i if you can afford it go to a track BCD crank set. So in short, they are good, just that site is overpriced, They have a "regular polish" one for 75, why pay 24$ for polishing, there just going to get dirty, and if they don't you are not riding you bike enough

I got the RDs after they switched the chainline or whatever... as a result I've always had a funny chainline on my beater bike (off by 3 or 4mm). I can't wait to get rid of them, just got some DA.

For the price category, my vote goes to Radius/Andel due to lack of chainline confusion and similar price.

I've had a few different correspondences with them since mid-December, but just be bad luck for you.
