Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Bikes: some- variety is good..

I live in Copenhagen, and I am afraid you have it mixed up. Portland is maybe the new Copenhagen, but it is not the other way around.

This a main road in ´58

Another main road in ´60

Bikes: 2 wheels...

as soon as you get off the train in copenhagen you're greeted with like 4000 bikes locked up.

then you see the amusement park.

one of the most fun nights i've ever was in copenhagen. old reggae men, cheap beer, good weed, dancing, slapping five with strangers, etc...

I agree. I visited Copenhagen a couple of times in '99 and '00. The city is a cyclist's eden. We even rode around on free city bikes, the same concept Paris recently introduced.

Portland definitely gets kudos though for its amazingly active bike scene.

It seems in the videos of Coppenhagen there aren't may redlight runners on the bikes, are there strict laws against that and riding in traffic lanes or do people just not do it for other reasons?

My wife is half-danish and wants to go to Copenhagen, perhaps as soon as this summer. How important for a visitor is knowledge of the Danish language? I'll do what I can to learn as much as I can in the interim, but how "lost" will I be with minimal language skills? When we went to Paris a few years ago I started every conversation with my rudimentary French and nearly every time the locals would answer back in English. Is Denmark like that? (I don't want to be The Ugly American and expect everyone to understand English.)

Personally, we both love the "girls on bikes" site.

Just about everyone in Denmark speaks English. You'll be fine. My wife is fluent in English and goes to conferences there from time to time and she's never had a language problem.

i love bikes and heels are dead sexy!! the combination is very pleasing to the eye.

i also don't see what's considered creepy about that sight but there is a note on one of the older posts..

We've come a long way. Moreso in some countries than others. Dave Moulton has had some grief about his post about Womenkind - You can save mankind - he responds here. But the narrow-minded won't get us down. Those who merely slap the label of 'sexist' on this blog don't have a very basic understanding of what it's all about and they judge others based on their own cultural norms. Without respecting the fact that people in other countries think differently.

The idea of taking photos of women while they are on their way to work and posting them on the internet doesn't seem creepy to you?

DC has rules, they aren't often followed by cars, bikes or peds. I think the trains do sometimes and planes do most of the time though...

did you read the part i quoted? american culture and standards are not the same throughout the world. if you would sift through that blog you would see comments from locals and others (female) who love the blog as it shows fashion while promoting cycling. there are even local girls who visit the site and put up pictures of themselves.

edit: not to mention you could substitute 'women' for 'local culture' and / or 'bike scene' in that question.
