Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bikes: 08 tommaso augusta, 88 specialized sirrus, random cruisers and stuff

My Tommaso Augusta

Howdy everyone. I've been lurking for a while now and I've seen a few threads with people wondering whats up with the tommaso augusta. I have had one for a little over a month now. My feelings on the bike: Its all its cracked up to be, a $400 fixed gear bike. I'd say it rides like a $500 bike so I think its a good value.

Just to clear up a few things I have seen asked about, the description of the bike says it has straight bars but it does indeed have the drop bars its pictured with, and it does have wellgo pedals with toe clips. The top tube is short, but I have long legs and a shorter upper body so it fits me fine. If you have a long torso you should avoid this bike. The hubs suck, but the dp18's are nice considering the overall cost of the bike. The put the clear coat over the decals, even the safety/sizing ones. That pissed me off because after you peel off the pointless decals the paint doesnt seem flush. The tommaso logo is painted on so you are stuck with it unless you paint the bike, which also pissed me off. I flipped the stem over to lower the bars an inch or so. It helps cancel out the short top tube I guess. The seat might as well be a 2x4.

The only other fixies I have ridden were road bike conversions. The augusta definitely rides more aggresively than they do. I have never ridden a real track bike so I can't compare it to one.

I'm no bike expert so I'll just leave it at that.

Heres the bike 5 minutes out of the box.

nice. thanks for posting the photo. It's nice to see a pic other than the stock one. I'd be curious to hear what you think of it after riding it for a while.

Nice, theres one of these out side of my school right now, with a deep v rear wheel on it. These caught my eye when they first came out, looks like a good bike for the money.

I've been looking and haven't seen it yet... which doesn't mean it's not out there... but it seems unique. which is a bit surprising.

I saw the pic and thought "ooh nice bike", then read your review. It's amazing how a solid-looking bike actually appears to have all the flaws you describe

Yeah, the biggest difference between this bike and the nicer entry level fixed gears is the details. With another $200 bucks you could get some key components which would make this bike a lot nicer, but with an extra $200 you could have also got a binachi pista. From my meager knowledge it seems that the geometry is similar to the pista, and the parts are similar too. The pista has a better stem (for my posture at least), a better seat, better hubs, better looking bars, and more street cred. I'd say thats worth the $200 if you've got it, but I don't. The cranks, bottom bracket, rims, chainwheel, and cog seem to be similar. The tommaso comes with a freewheel too, I dont know about the pista. So, my conclusion is that the augusta is a bootleg pista. It rides fine though and is worth the price though so Im okay with it.

Heres the geometry of the augusta on the left and pista on the right.

54 frame size 53
53.29 top tube actual 53.5
53.57 top tube effective 53.5
95.6 wheel base 94.7
39 chainstay 38.3
74 headtube angle 74
75 seattube angle 75.5
