Just ordered a 90mm stem and some 123s.

We'll see how this works.

i flipped and chopped a pair of drop bars i had and i'm using them on my conversion. it's been great. i never got use to the length that a pair of "proper" bullhorns had, and i never really road in the dropped position anyway unless i was scrambling up a hill. do it!

millrt138 01-08-08 09:33 PM

Gotta say chopnflop is worth every penny. old road bars are at most a dime a dozen, so why not? i suggest to make your cut 90 degrees to avoid plug problems- this results in the slightly strange look of chopnflop, which is kinda cooler, i think.

I also chose narrow bars, bullhorns usually don't come so narrow.

You can fix that with a hammer, if you have those crappy plastic bar ends ones that come with old road drops.

Zombie Carl 01-08-08 09:55 PM

If you're not using $$$ MASH bar-ends, you're not doing it right.

How do you get the cut so that it's perpendicular? I've done flop and chops with the tool that I usually use for cutting steerers and I haven't figured out a way to cut at 90 degrees this way.

ThunderChunky 01-08-08 10:42 PM

hacksaw dewd, not too complicated.

millrt138 01-08-08 11:34 PM

Yeah, hacksaw and masking tape to mark it. jus' eyeball it- there's no real way to measure it. a file helps to fine tune.

Cut-off tools are kinda garbage for cutting bars with curve or double walls.

pretty much. i used a cut off wheel on mine, and had to go back over the cuts with the bench grinder to even things out. i cut a pair of my buddies drops for him with a hacksaw, and everything came out much nicer. granted, it could have just been a user error, but the hacksaw cuts were much cleaner to begin with.

Man I chopped my Pista's track bar and regret it - cos they're upside down now they curve forwards instead of being straight across - riding position is screwed my hands are too far forwards (though my biceps are getting a workout)

TimArchy 01-09-08 05:37 AM

I like my chop and flip bars. They're way better than the flip-n-chop bars I used to use. And don't get me started on those flop-and-chop knock off bars. they're just crap.

I say the only rule is try to get bars that don't have any outward sweep to the drops. When you flip them it will put the sweep at an unnatural angle for your wrists. Personally I'd love to find something like the syntace bars that bent in a little, but with more up-sweep at the ends so you really have something to grab onto when you're getting low.

Rusty Piton 01-09-08 07:30 AM

Two of my bikes roll with this setup. The other has regular drops, but that is soon to change. For riding fixed, the hand position of bullhorns helps me greatly.

skinnyland 01-09-08 07:56 AM

I use flip'n'chops on my conversion, and I enjoy them immensely - they work great for riding in the city, providing multiple comfy hand positions and allowing me to stay more upright if I wish in order to see over traffic.
I don't race pursuit on a track, so I don't need "real" bullhorns.

Sorry for raising and old thread but can you put time trial brakes on the ends like these?

I'm taking a road bike that is 1 cm too big for me and trying to do something with it so I figured a single speed franken bike?

Generally no. If you're going to spend money on levers just drop the $20-$40 on bullhorns or pursuit bars.

melon 11-29-08 04:01 PM

i dont like them. im more of a drops person anyway, but when it comes to pursuit bars i want somthing with a longer reach than any chop and flop can offer. chopped bars are more similar to risers with bar ends than proper pursuit bars like nitto RB-021's.

you might as well just ride the hoods of your current drops as the position is exactly the same as what you will achieve when you chop them. then when youve ridden for a while and become a better rider youl learn to love the option of going deep into the drops.

golfer007 11-29-08 10:34 PM

The dude who cut mine for me at the lbs like angled the cut so its impossible to fit a plug into them and they are already short anyhow. I just picked up a set of nitto drops and am thinking about getting some no name bull horns from a lbs. What do you guys think/?

ADSR 11-29-08 11:59 PM

Just don't try and chop/flop mustache bars. :-(

bexley 11-30-08 06:31 AM

Loving it. Felt like a jackass for cutting new Nitto's, but I don't ride in the drops and prefer curved elbows to the sharp ones on proper horns.

^^ Nice bike. Bars look super comfy. What saddle is that BTW

bexley 11-30-08 09:19 AM

Selle Royal something something. The only one I've ever seen, and I'm a sucker for rare saddles. Just as comfy as the bars (which have two thick layers of cotton tape btw).

Kinda pissed at myself for getting it all black & blue by riding in jeans and sweating profusely from my ass.
