To have a Mac means more than just owning a computer, it means that you ride a really hipster-esq FG or SS bike that has both risers and aero-bars, platform pedals, and no brakes. Maybe I am biased because I don't live in San Francisco, but I think Macs are more about saying that you own a Mac and like to use the WiFi in Starbucks than they are about having a decent computer. To demonstrate my point I present you with the link http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse....gi?u=macs_cant, which will perfectly outline the way I feel about Macs. But, in the end I still live by the saying 'to each his/her own." So, whatever.

I understand your point about macs being fashionable, and how owning one seems like the latest "hipster trend" (*cough* fixed gear *cough*). But you really shouldn't poopoo them just because they're popular. I've been using them since 1998 because I was tired of my WIN95 box freezing every time I would open more than 2 programs. Now I know XP is miles better, and it's very stable and I could care less if you use windows (I mean, c'mon there are absolutely no games for macs), but for what I need a computer - Internet, email, word processing - macs accomplish this task for me wonderfully. But I miss the days when people would laugh at you for just using one, and ask, "They still make Apple computers?"

Oh and here's an interesting picture

Ewww Java ;-)

Joking aside thats how I feel too. I was a big old linux geek growing up then I got a powerbook and fell in love. I don't muck around anymore with configuring things, I just open it up and start coding.

And as for maddox's comment about mac users not being able to shut up, it's because we have tons of free time to talk about them with the whole "it just worked so I have tons of free time" thing :D

But then again I am very biased, I make my living with mine and being a mac software developer makes me a hot commodity.

Exactly. I came up with Linux, when it was still in beta and Slackware was the only distribution around. I went to a Magnet School and studied programming, and even contributed some early code to Linux, porting a few BSD apps for class credit.

So I love the functionality of Unix, but the ease of a slick GUI. Apple has wrapped this up nicer than Gnome or KDE ever will, and it's not worth my time to deal with Windows, so buying an iBook was a no-brainer.

Also, Doc_Holiday is a moron.

Rather.. you started with Slackware, too? Way to find another ex Slacler - on BFSSFG of all places! I still like Slackware to this day, I must admit, but I went onto HP-UX and Solaris professionally, and now, recently, I completely abandoned the hell that's the IT profession. Back to academia for me. Slack is still nice, though.

I'm surprised at the few old hat Linux guys here.

Weird FOSS story. I ran into RMS before he was going to do a speech when I was briefly at college. He asked for a clock with a second hand and he wasn't wearing any shoes. Needless to say smelly feet and a gross beard didn't leave a good impression on me. Torvolds is more live and let live, down to earth and easy going. RMS scares me.

wroomwroomoops 01-09-08 10:01 AM

Smelly feet? I always thought people who don't wear shoes have generally better foot hygene.

Are we derailing the thread?

I was raised on macs by my parents. They're graphic designers and have been using them since the first one showed up in the mid 80's. In grade school everyone would go out of their way to tell me that they hated macs. Now that every pc home has an ipod, people are all changing their opinions on mac, and I think that is the reason for the larger mac boom. that and the iphone. I've loved using a mac and I could never switch to a pc, but recently i've been a bit disappointed. My ipod video that I got about a year and a half ago broke, and my white macbook has been having problems since the day I opened it. I don't know if this is because they are shooting out macs faster and not being more careful with quality, but it makes me wonder if I would have so many problems when there was such a small market.

He should have clipped his toenails.

A thread about computers on a bike forum. I think it was derailed from the start.

PC + XP pro at home/work.

Just never got into the mac thing, used to run Slackware, but now get my *nix fix at work and don't play with it at home anymore.

Their computer QC has definitely deteriorated, but I'd chalk up the iPod Video death to it being a portable device and having a physical hard drive. Friends of mine who work at the Apple store see far fewer problems with the Nanos and whatnot.

Their Macbooks and iBooks have always had more problems than their professional lines, too. I bet it's a calculated risk of lower quality to hit lower margins.

Hey, we've done this before at least twice...it is interesting to see the increase in Mac use. Oh, and since my poll of '04 I ditched my backup PC and am 100% Mac now. Anyway, take a look at 04 and 05 polls:

Dear internets and its inhabitants: PC stands for personal computer. Windows computers and Macintosh computers are both PCs. The proper question to ask in such situations is "Windows or Mac?" This also gives room for Linux/BSD users to ***** about the lack of options.

As for me, ex-Microsoft (DOS 5.0 - Windows 2000), ex-Macintosh (System 7.5.5 - OS X 10.3.9, though I may pick up a Macbook at some point), currently Linux (Red Hat 6.2 - various versions of Debian and currently Ubuntu).

I once tried fighting that battle... heck OS X is more PC then Windows.. but until the internets stops calling them "MACS" and using "Ipods" with "Itunes" I think you will be fighting an uphill battle.

Heck even "URL" is in most situations used incorrectly and should be "URI"

In that same vein, a fixed gear bike is a single speed, technically. But in bicycle land the terms are understood to mean two different things. So...words are often ***** of their original meaning and used anyway. I wouldn't worry about it.

The phrase "PC" in reference to a Windows (or MS-DOS) based computer is a widely acknowledged and understood colloquialism. Only nerds recognize the distinction, but even they understand what it means.

Windows XP here...and it runs flawlessly. I have three workstations on my home network, including a wireless laptop. It was a piece of cake to set up and I have none of the mysterious problems that all you Mac users cite.

i don't believe you - about windows running flawlessly, it sounds like an exaggeration. what anti virus software do you use?. i am a mac user i don't use any anti virus software.

mac(s) here. i'm a designer, and i like things to work properly.

although from a style standpoint, i miss the days when pulling out a white laptop was a huge contrast: it was de rigeur in the studio or at a creative job, but very atypical in a cafe or other public setting. i love apples being popular (because from my immediate social experience, user satisfaction is much higher) and i'm glad people are able to make a real choice rather than defaulting to a windows/x86 machine.

now let's figure out a way to hack OSX to run on a non-apple clone.

EDIT:
Computer use:
Originally, dos/windows guy.. but have since progressed through various flavours of linux (slackware/redhat/gentoo/debian), and still use debian for work/scientific computing. My own computer is now a mac -- all the power of linux/unix, but with the "shiny" GUI.
