toe clips are for suckas!
i'm not the most coordinated guy... and when i recently went to clips after riding platforms forever, i'm feeling that clips are just plain unsafe. i find myself trying to flip into the pedal instead of paying attention to traffic. i fell over twice yesterday because i couldn't get my foot down fast enough. i took those p.o.s.'s off and i feel sooo much more in control.
|
if you can't flip the pedals to get into the clips/straps, maybe you shouldn't be riding in traffic in the first place?
|
They make climbing/skidding/everything SO much more comfy for me, plus I feel a greater sense of security in them when i'm riding, perticularly in the rain. You basically dont understand their importance until you REALLY need em. If you prefer platforms, by all means ride em, but I wouldnt say toe clips are for suckas...
|
nah... I wont...
|
he's right.
i'm taking mine off right now |
Umm...sorry you could not figure it out. You'd think that since they are so dangerous they would have been outlawed by now.
|
Suckas indeed...
No wait seriously it isn't that hard. It might take a bit of practice to get used to, but they're really kind of a good idea. And paying attention in traffic is more important than toe clips; be careful... |

It seriously only takes a few rides to be able to get into clips without looking/trying |

Yeah, clipless is so much better! oh wait, platforms you say? Uh...yeah, right on, I guess.
|
gehrk, last year i rode 5000 miles just commuting. i ride on the road almost always. it's just that i don't like the fact that i don't have the same range of movement on the pedal

how often do you ride with your heels on your platforms...? |
I hate to be an a:)shole but... learn some f:)cking common sense. You get into the clips BEFORE venturing out into the street / traffic. If you can't master that, ride around in circles practicing it until you can. I sympathesize with you if it's wet out and your pedals are slippery, but other than that...
|
lol
i agree with the op for really wicked mtb stuff but certainly not for road riding whats the problem again ? |

even if its wet, its doable. I, for once, will try and offer helpful advice instead of simply snide remarks. practice makes perfect. try sitting on your bike in a hallway so you can hold yourself up if need be. Start standing over the bike like you would when stopped at a light (if you cant track stand) and then stand up like you are starting and put your off foot in the straps. if you start to tip, put out your hand and lean on the wall. do it about a hundred times, you could even try and learn track stands while you are at it, its a good idea if theres bad weather outside. takes up an hour or two nicely. |
have you ever watched someone fall trackstanding? it's always because of the clip. 99% of the time my foot would slip out effortlessly, but that f-in 1%!
|
clips/straps are the only way to go dudeman.. give yourself some time to adjust. you aint riding a beach cruiser in flipflops anymore
|
lol
how'd you know i just moved from fl |
better to fall track standing than to have given up and relegated to platforms, which will bite you the one time you really want to dig your toes in.

but seriously, just learn to ride with toe clips, you're not safer without them. If your foot ever slips off the pedal on a descent you're going to eat it and hopefully not into a car. If you have brakes though by all means ride platforms until your little heart's content. |
let's not provoke fungis into anything here now..
|
clipless > clips/straps > platforms.
5k on platforms! props to you then. |
