freewheel removal advice
looking for help on removing a "dicta" brand (made in taiwan) freewheel... i've tried using a pin spanner, then a hammer & screwdriver but to no avail, any tips?

close up would be good. On second look, there's a chance it's the kind that can't be removed and needs to be disassembled first via this method.
just swingin' by your LBS is probably the safest option

Check the Park Tool web site. They have freewheel removal tools for a variety of makes.
One key consideration is whether your old freewheel is worn out and headed for the scrap barrel, or whether you want to use it again. If it is no more than junk, the tips of a thin nose plier can be used as a spanner wrench to remove the retaining ring. You might need to clamp the pliers to a piece of wood for leverage. The threads are left-hand threads. Once the retainer ring is removed, the cluster and the bearing balls come away leaving the core. A pipe wrench will remove it.

Since my last post I had to remove a freewheel. The removal tool would not reach for some very good reasons that need not be mentioned. I did what I suggested in the post above. The pipe wrench did not damage or mar the core. I plan to reassemble the freewheel in case I want to use it again. (It was a 5 speed freewheel.)
