is my bike too expensive?

hi i am building a fixie bike for my senior project in high school and i was wondering if the bike that i am building cost more than regular price.... i calculated it cost about $700

more or less it will look like this

parts:
crank: sugino messenger
frameset: sparton
BottomBracket: sugino
Cog: surly
Hubs: formula
Rims: weinmann dp-18
Spokes: DT
Headset: tange seiki levin
Grips: unknown cost about $7
Handlebar:unknown cost about $15

n other stuff will come from my schwinn le tour road bike

and what do u think about the bike that i am building?

theres definately cheaper entry level complete bikes, but to say 700 is too expensive is far from what i imagine many have spent on this board on their fixie. the components you have chosen are far from the expensive side. either way i'd say youd be happy with the build if you can justify the price in relation to your income.

no it's not. generally you want to buy good parts that last. bling v.s. quality parts are two different things. so far it looks good. along the way you'll probably be upgrading along the way as you learn what your tastes are

p.s. put some toe clips on there or they'll send your build to the other thread

Bikes: so many

Have you figured the cost of innertubes, tires, brakes, stem, seat post or cables? Or are those the items that will come from your schwinn? Also, there will be costs associated with assembling the bike unless you already have the tools or can borrow them. $700 sounds a little on the 'spensive side, but I don't know what that particular frameset costs. You might consider a more entry level frameset or a conversion if you're worried about the cost.

well i guess mine is more expensive because i buy new parts by parts instead of used whole bike...
once my mentor told me that "to buy the whole bike is usually cheaper than buying the parts.... but more likely u get what u want when u build ur own bike" but idk... im just a newb haha...

You're right, building a bike with new parts will cost more than just buying a complete bike but you will get exactly what you want providing you can afford it. You can reduce the cost by buying used parts or using stuff you already have (like you've done with the le tour).

wish our school did something like that. i feel like if you want you can do something more meaningful than simply allen wrenching parts together, given that your classmates are doing documentaries, publishing themselves, finding their biological father etc.

why not see if you can build a bike for free with no $ spent out of pocket. go dumpster diving, build parts yourself, form relationships with LBS, etc. it would be pretty cool
