Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

this thread has one hell of an oxymoron going on in its title.

I disagree. I think folding bikes are actually pretty fantastic. I don't care for the "concept bikes" like the one linked above, but I would love to own a quality folding bike.

why?
unless you lack storage space for a bicycle (i don't know anyone who does), folding bikes seem like too much compromise.
they're also kinda ugly and typically excessively engineered imo.

I agree for most folding bikes, except for this concept. I'd get it in a heartbeat.

Disc brakes, all cables hidden, folds down to almost nothing, looks super Buck Rogers.

Theres a a couple big problems. I can't put a tt pad on it, and my aerospoke won't work with the single sided chainstay.

Not really sure what's going on with the drivetrain there, or maybe I'm taking the animation of the bike folding a little too literally.

It looks like the chain and cabling are totally contained within the fairing, and the chainstays rotate around the bottom bracket to fold up.

Anyone seen these offerings from C'dale?

I realise they are just concepts, but I have seen something similar built by them, even if it was only a prototype.

I would totally get a folding bike if I had a real need for one.

Bikes: so many

I like how the wheels magically roll away as if they no longer exist. 20" is the only way to go on a folder. I've used my folding bike exactly twice in two years, good thing it was only $50.
