Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

New Performance Retail Location in Philly

I was at Staples on Delaware ave off of Reed St a few weeks ago and saw the paper signs on the windows for Perfomance Bicycles.

It looks like it's going to be a big store.

Just wanted to give a "heads-up".

we just got one of them here. i guess it's a big chain or something. they're always over staffed and the dudes just walk around all bored and quite like. one guy was real helpful once but he was more interested in my jeep than anything else. it's mostly high end road bikes. they don't have anything for fixed gear / singlespeeds and the guys at this shop didn't know anything about them. a couple of them were asking me about mine when i rode it there once. they had just read an article about them and didn't understand the fascination.

Yeah, it seems like a Performance retail store would be a great place to pick some tubes and cables, and I would love to be able to get my hands on something like a carbon fork before I bought it online. I wish they had one where I live.

they sell the basic fuji track but not much else in terms of track parts. They dont carry track cogs or anything fancy like that. I picked up a cheap floorstand pump (19$) and some lube there. Their labor rates are alrite if you need a fork or seatpost cut, but yea, they aren't real knowledgable about track stuff.

Good thing about a big store like them is that they usually take returns with no questions asked, i actually broke the gauge of the pump i bought from them and just exchanged it, hee hee.

Pricing overall is reasonable, still over what you would find online but some good deals to be had.

Crap. Now I have to pay sales tax on on-line orders from them since I am in PA.

Bikes: schwinn suburban conversion with chopped risers LOLZ!

I manage a Performance in SoCal. The staff is hit or miss I must admit. Most guys/gals will know a lot about road and mtbs but not track.

I try and stock cogs/lockrings and chainring bolts as well as some inexpensive track wheels at my store but that's just me ordering from QBP or the like and is up to management discretion.

A word to the wise: if you want something and Performance sells it either in store or online we will match the lowest price you can find from an authorized dealer of the exact same item. The smart folk roll in with printouts from biketiresdirect, probikekit, coloradocyclist etc. and pick out all their goodies or order them in store for the lowest prices availible. No, you can't get black ProRace tires if btd had purple ones for $12 or size 45 Sidis if REI has the same ones only in 38 and 52 for $100 but you get the idea. Also, make printouts from Perf's own website. Many times the in store prices are more expensive, so we'll just price match.

Stuff fixed gear riders like myself might like that is readily found in store: Gatorskin tires (and high end race tires), tubes often for $2.97, Sidi shoes and shoes under $50, lots of clipless pedals, $5 bar tape, inexpensive basic clothing, cotton cycling caps, good cheap tools as well as the good stuff, cheap blinky LED lights, lots of helmets under $30.

I used to be an ops manager at a performance store. That is until my roommate ratted me out for the the full 10 speed DA groupset, and pair of Record cranksets that i "found" in the trash. most if not all of the employees here in colorado know only about mountain stuff, if that, and absolutely nothing about road or track.

i like the forte pro kevlar folding tires. and yeah, their prices on shoes, pedals, lights, and tools is sometimes too good to pass up. but for the big stuff, i like to go to the little guy.

How come, if there are already locations in PA, I have never had to pay sales tax? Guess I have been sticking it to the man this whole time.

that's good to know. thanks for sharing! how much do the gatorskins usually go for as i was about to order some. but if i can take this printout showing $24.03 and get them for that price i'm all for it.

https://probikekit.com/display.php?code=Y1320

and will it still work even though it shows stock as being 0.

i have also picked up a few things there. they had some killer sales and i picked up a rack for my jeep and a floor pump for like $100. i've gotten some small things like brake cables as well.

Technically you can't get them for that price if they're not in stock, but it doesn't hurt to try. Maybe you'll run into a dense salesperson. They're on sale in the stores for $29.97 right now (thru the 20th) though. I think most stores stock all sizes- 23's, 25's, and 28's (!) wire bead only.

Well said. If you know what you are doing The Perf is a great place to get deals.

I picked up Easton CF MTB bars for $45 because I brought in a printout of an on-line close out and they matched it.
