Here is my upgraded pista:

I'd say the most noticeable upgrades were the:
Seat - the stock seat sucked real hard compared to the seat I have now. My butt has thanked me for it!
Crankset/bb - Getting a new crankset and bottom bracket that are smooth and work nicely you notice a HUGE difference, investing in a solid upgrade can really change your riding.
Rear cog - changing the gearing of the rear cog obviously yields huge changes in the ease of your riding, so choosing a ratio that suits your area obviously will make a big difference.

Here's mine. Bought used and already including most of the parts, I just added the saddle, Thomson seatpost stem, handlebars, and a brake. In love with this thing, though don't have a better pic. It's nice and comfy for city riding, but doesn't mind hilly centuries either, save for lack of water bottle bosses.

sokie1981 and aarong, what kind of forks do you have in those photos?
I'm gradually upgrading a San Jose (so far, just slick tires and cross levers) -- what brands/models of cranks and bottom brackets would you recommend?
Thanks!

My fork is a Pake unicrown I think. I got it off ebay so I don't know for sure. As for cranks everyone will tell you Sugino 75 or something like that, but for that's pretty god damn expensive. I think anything in the midrange would be good. My andel cranks were only like 90 bucks and are comparable to sugino rd and the like. Just get whatever is in your price range and it'll suit you well enough

drainyoo--congratulations. Your bike is my favorite pista ever. It's perfect. Love the gumwall tires and the saddle. New cranks will look classy and the fork is a nice touch.
