Thomson Seatpost or Stem?

Ok, so today in Macon, Georgia was the Thomson Appreciation Day at the Thomson Factory. Sadly Mr. Ronnie Thomson (President of the company) died last weekend. So still we held the event in honor of him as we do every year in Macon, Ga. This event is actually Mtb specific but I still showed up on my fixed gear bike anyway hoping to enter the track stand competition they were holding. Well with such bad weather, they canceled many of the events except the endurance race. Anyone doing the 4 1/2 hour long endurance race received a voucher to obtain either a handle bar stem or a seatpost. You can pick the color (black or silver) and you can pick the size. So right now I have a stem that I like, and a friend is wanting to sell me a Miche Supertype seatpost for really cheap. I can't decide if I want to replace my stem or go ahead and get the free seatpost and blow the supertype post. What do you guys think? The stem I have is the 3t Mutant stem. I like the looks of it. Remember, either way its free.

Coincidentally, I just posted this.

You could get a setback 26.8 post and sell or trade it to me. PM me if interested.

Tangsooyuk 01-19-08 10:33 PM

I would roll the 3T and supertype and sell/trade the Thomson piece for something else I can use, be it part or cash.

bikeage 01-20-08 02:42 PM

thomson, hands down...

Supertype will look good with a Mutant. Do that if you want form.

Thompson is stronger, lighter, has better clamping, etc. Technically better in every way. Do that if you want function.

the miche supertype seatpost and the 3t mutant stem are two of the ugliest bicycle components ever created. you'll do well to replace either.

Selfish reasons aside, I have to agree.

a good way to get thomson posts and stems for cheaper on ebay is to spell thomson wrong i.e. thompson. all the idiots spell it wrong like myself hence how i kinda figured this out.

SinVoz 01-20-08 05:29 PM

^^^ as of right now, you are completely wrong

gargiulo.mike 01-20-08 05:40 PM

not completely.
i got a thomson elite 27.2 post for 45 shipped a couple months ago in pretty much mint condition using that method, the auction had barely any hits foo.

awormiscoming 01-20-08 05:53 PM

Yeah a friend of mine got a slightly used Thomson seat post for 18 bucks on Ebay.

I say, either choice is great. Or like someone else said, just sell it and buy something you really need. But since I kind of like the super type post, I'll just say, "Get the stem."

jdeane4 01-20-08 11:39 PM

I think I am going to just get a Thomson Masterpiece Seatpost. I am going to claim my prize tomorrow. The supertype seatpost is cool but it looks horrible with a Brooks saddle. Plus, this seat post is free and made locally (the factory is only 10 miles away).

I rock thomson on my two bestest bikes and love it so I say if you like your stem save the money and roll with the thomson under your seat

Need help. I've already searched eBay. Can anyone point me to a site that sells a thomson elite stem in silver with 5degree neg rise? all the stems i find have posi rise.

oh sorry you are right. i was just looking at my bike and noticed that you can in fact see it at about 1' distance. my bad. but then again you also got pressured into going with a drop instead of a rise cause of what the internet told you to do.

trons 04-22-08 12:49 AM

that's too bad..

shutup i have 2 bikes and i want to upgrade the one that has a neg stem with the exact same neg rise and dimensions. got nothing to do with "what the internet told me to do" punk. now run along. I don't want my bike to look like yours.

Velocità 04-22-08 01:31 AM

to actually help you out here hooters it seems as though the 5 deg elite stems come only with positive rise with the option of flipping. the X2 and X4 dont come in 5 deg

I_luv_hooters 04-22-08 01:35 AM

thanks. i dont want to argue. sorry. this seller claims his MTB elite is neg, but when i look carefully i dont think it is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ayphotohosting

Velocità 04-22-08 01:43 AM

that stem is pos and i got the info from the thomson site
