Rear Hub problem

I took my alexrims r500 to the bike shop today and had them put on some tires and tubes and put a new cog on there. When they were putting the cog on there it fitted in then when they put in the lockring it kept on spinning and not tighten. I bought these rims but almost brand new used but the rear hub was brand new. They are saying that the thread on the rear hub for the lockring is stripped but when I put the lockring on there it still turns and it is not stripped.Any suggestions on what I should I do?

Any chance that the LBS did not know that the lockring was reverse threaded?

Did they try another lockring? Don't forget it's reverse threaded.

Even though I hope to god the LBS isn't this stupid.... but is it a single speed side of the hub they're installing it to?

OMG, did I just hit the nail on the head?

From: where i lay my head is home.

Bikes: bianchi pista workhorse, cannondale r1000, mountain bike fixed conversion

forgive me if i misunderstand, but if you're putting it on there okay, what's the problem, aside from not-so-hot lbs mechanics? anyway, you're one step ahead of them if you're turning it okay.

but if it keeps spinning it sounds like some part of the threads is stripped.

or, what if it is the freewheel side?

i wish i could see this in person.

Wrong threaded lockring? I won't pretend I know anything except that they're different. Maybe they tried to put on an Italian threaded one since your hub is probably standard thread.

Bikes: '85 Full Cycle Cycle.

The way I'm reading the OP is that the lockring spins on but once there it gets too far up the threads, it spins freely. It sounds like there are a few stripped lockring threads and that the OP needs a new hub or a freewheel and some brakes.

your lockring threads are toast.

I can't speak on locktiting the lockring, because I havn't done it- but if it is just spinning when you try to tighten it, I don't think it will really help.

next time, have them install the cog and tighten the lockring. Go and ride it up a big hill, or sprint for a block wihtout using your legs to stop. this will tighten down the cog even more, leaving a little gap between the cog and the lockring. Now have the shop tighten your lockring again, you should be set.
