Fixed gear compatible trainer? (Not rollers)
 

Anyone know of a fluid trainer that is compatible with track bikes and their rear axles with solid hub nuts and 120mm spacing?

I've heard a number of stories to the contrary. Can you please site an example where you know for a fact a trainer has mated solidly with a track bike with track spacing and solid (non-QR) nutted axle?

NO, Tacx makes good trainers but they won't work with 120mm spacing, theTacx Satori work only with its own quick release it's impossible to use nutted hubs

what isn't loud to me might be loud to you, it's the only trainer i've ever had so i don't have a lot to compare to

if you do a search i think a bunch of people on here use it as well, they may have had more to say

Oh screw it. I have downstairs neighbors I can't afford to piss off right now. My fork mount roller trainer is going to do that. My mag trainer is going to do that. I'm sick of buying beat up used trainers. Bugger. I just did it finally. I decided to jump the gun, not wait for more replies. I just dropped $319 (with free shipping) on a brand new trainer from 1Up. Hell, if I hate it after 60 days, I'll get my money back. I can't really afford it, but I did cancel my gym membership. An investment in my health I guess. Wow, $319 is a LOT of money right now with school and all, but...yes...it is an investment in my health.

yeah i am also poor as well. i'm thinking about getting one of those crappy $80 Bell trainers. anybody have any experience with those? i know they are probably loud as hell, but im broke as a joke.

Minoura Mag from pricepoint or similar website. Its very cheap (around $100 new) and I spent all winter riding my fixed bike on it before I got my new road bike.

paying 319$ to ride inside?, Take that 300$, spend 150$ on a beater bike, 150 on some merino wool clothing and windbreaker. (maybe you have both already) And cancel your car insurance/bus pass, Save 80-250$ a month and its good for you, plus after riding through snow all winder you'll ride Every where in any weather in the summer appreciating every second of 15o+weather.

Most bigger LBS that sell fitness equipment have display models--my guess is that if you bring your bike in and are nice to them, they'll let you test-fit. My cheapo (around $150) minora (from Performance) trainer works fine on track spacing.

A) I did that in my teens and twenties, I have nothing to prove anymore cycling wise. Trust me, I'm as tough as I need to be when I need to be.
B) I'm doing 16 college credits on-line this semester. I can study on the trainer, I can't on the road.
C) Let's see YOU ride from from Brooklyn to the Bronx for work, late at night. Then we'll talk.
D) Just to safely carry all my sh*t, I'd also have to invest in a rear rack and a set of completely water proof panniers. So, it would cost MORE to go with your idea.
E) Asking a Paramedic and Search And Rescue K9 Handler to cancel his car insurance is just plain dumb. I use that car for emergencies. In fact, I'm about to get it back on the road again, after having it sit until I could afford a repair. It scares me not having it available, and the public benefits from me driving it. I commute with it for good reason.
F) I like to ride for pleasure these days, not pain. Refer to "A".

As a health care worker, I'd be more than happy to help remove your foot from your mouth. Just nod and grunt, I'm standing by.

No, I can't. It isn't even slightly feasible. Plus, as I said, a trainer allows me to ride while I'm "in class".

I race track extensively and do a lot of workouts with a track frame on a trainer. I've tried most of them and the one that really stands out is the 1-Up. It's beautifully made, compact, no hydraulic fluid (so you don't get leaks), and superb road feel. The axle fixtures are simple conical cups with deep recesses at the bottom, so they seat nicely on the track nuts and let any axle that protrudes simply insert further into the cups. Better quality domed track nuts work better than cheap junk track nuts, so I'd encourage you to get some Dura Ace rear nuts for the firmest fit. And these cups were made for Phil Wood hubs -- just get the BMX conical stainless track nut washers and they fit the trainer like it was machined for them. The 1-Up is also quiet enough that you can use it indoors without waking everyone up. It comes with a 30-day no-obligation return privilege, and their service is absolutely superb (I had a problem after two years and they immediately sent me a whole new flywheel assembly).

Good to hear! I'm aware of your vast knowledge of track cycling equipment, so this is exactly the review I needed to hear.

+1 to 1up -- I bought one used, and it had the older flywheel design. The previous owner(s) may not have treated it so well, and it had a bit of a wobble at high speed. I shipped it for service, and as with the above post, they replaced the entire assembly with the newest revision. I had to pay for shipping to them as I'm in Canada; they paid for return.

+1 CycleOps. It works fine with 120mm spacing. My track nuts are somewhat scratch from usage but it's not important or safety issue.

Got my 1Up the other day. This thing is a piece of art. Seriously quiet. Low to the ground. Works as advertised. Great for single geared track bikes. Great for recumbents. And really good looking. Wow!

If you use a trainer with a fixed gear bike is it a seriously whoop ass work out???

...as whoop ass as riding on the street...just less exciting.
