Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

RIP Sheldon Brown..

I rode today on wheels I built according to his instructions. I never met him, but I feel strongly connected to him through our love of bikes. I'll think of Sheldon Brown when I ride, and hope there's smooth asphalt wherever he may be.

i remember the first time i went to his site.. just after really learning about fixed gears , since its one of thie first things that returns when googling fixed gears and wondering to myself in amazement about how many hours he must have invested in that site alone, i found his dedication to the fixed gear cycling inspiring; my sincerest condolences to his close friends and family, he'll most certainly be missed

Yeah, freakin' a.

He was the reason I picked up a fixed gear bike instead of sticking to only geared road bikes. His wealth of knowledge and easy access made a DIY mechanic out of all of us; and though I've never had personal contact with him, I truly respect his depth of practical know-how and the enormous contribution has has made to the entirety of the cycling community.

Rest in Peace Sheldon Brown.

I was literally about to email him a question regarding brakes on fixies. And then I remembered.

It hasn't sunk in yet.

very sad news. reading his website got me into riding a fixed wheel and bike mechanics. his passion was contagious. my first conversion is a bob jackson that has chrome forks inspired by his raliegh international which is definitely my favourite conversion out there. rest in peace sheldon brown and thanks. thoughts to his wife and family.

Well this sucks. Condoloences to his family and everyone. Most of us didn't even meet him, but shared the same passions. I can't imagine what his family is feeling right now.

rest in a better place devoid of health problems, but full of unique bikes.

sheldon brown was the closest thing to superhero i've known to actually exist. whenever his name was brought up in here he always responded to threads instantaneously.

This is about as sad as I have ever been about the death of someone who is not a close friend or relative.

He's the most important teacher that I never met. Nearly everything I know about bikes I owe to this man.

RIP, Captain Bike. I'm sure you were closer to enlightenment than any of us will ever get.

I just emailed him last week about wanting to buy some of his bikes. He told me there would be a swap meet to get rid of some of them while others would be for sale on ebay. just FYI. He will be missed.

Wow, Sheldon is the one who inspired me to lose my freewheel. This is a great loss for those of us who have picked his brain and sought obscure information. Newbs everywhere have lost a great and giving teacher, experienced riders have lost a gifted conversationalist and we've all lost a friend. He'll be sorely missed.

RIP Sheldon, there are no gears allowed in heaven!

On the bright side, his legacy will still live on in all of the writings he's compiled, and hopefully his website will still inspire people to try FG.
