+1, Sante groups are pretty rare and very nice looking. Probably worth preserving.

Are you in Orange County?
I think you hit me up through craig's.
Anyway, I bought that same kit from Performance. For my Cannondale R300 with Verticals, I didn't need the tensioner.
What did it for me was:
46t Chainring
16t Sproket
1 half link
I bought the kit because it came with the 16t sproket and silver spacers.
Happy Building!

I don't really have anything useful to say, sorry, but that Schwinn is absolutely gorgeous. My life would be complete with one like that. The classic road bike part of my life, at least.
I agree on the conversion thing though. That thing is just too nice to not be seen with its downtube shifters and old-school black annodized wheels (I love those.)

You may find this to be the case with your schwinn... as I have some experience with using a freewheel & a fixed wheel on the same frame...
With the freewheel, I had to use the tensioner (very similar to yours) because even with almost perfection tension, I would still throw the chain at least once a day....
ohh well... just my luck.

I am not down with such elitist attitudes. If the guy enjoys his converted bike, what business is that of yours?
Just to piss off such snobs, I am going to convert a nice vintage road bike - will add risers and BMX grips. Can't think of anything else offensive right now. Any ideas?

Check your chainline and check that your rear wheel is really parallel to the centerline of the bike.

again, thanks for all the info, but i've already made my decision about the Conversion.
To all that said i should keep all the original parts that i can, i will be keeping every single original part so in the future if someone wanted to purchase it from me in road bike form, it wouldnt be too hard. i do not plan on changing much or hacking up the brake line mounts to make it clean or anything, i just want to ride it.
i do respect all the criticism about converting a classic road bike, and if i didn't already drop the bike off at the bike shop, id maybe try to sell it.
thing is, i got this thing for dirt cheap from CL(40-50 bucks). i wouldn't want to jack up the price much since the guy selling it could have done the same.
elevated: yeah that was me that contacted you via CL, i think i was trying to purchase one brake lever? im not sure.

I missed that white derailer. That's literally sick hot. Yes it would be a crime to allow that group to be separated. Just put everything in carefully labelled ziploc bags, fix it and ride the snot out of it.

Heres my update. the conversion is done, still working on the seat being redone so an old trek seat is on there for now.
still have all original components for the bike so it could be converted if i ever wanted to go back.

That **** looks pretty classy for a conversion bike. I'd ride it. If you ever get a new fixed gear you will have a sweet road bike too. Win/win for you.
