I havent seen your chain line so I don't know if this is an option but... Have you considered keeping the 42 tooth chainring and running it to the 16 tooth cog your wheelset comes with? That would give you 69 gear inches. I prefer 72 inches for city riding but 69 is close. Maybe you should try that out before you buy a new cog. I dot know, just a thought.

If you just want to take the chainring off, you don't need to pull the crank off. You just need the right size allen wrench to loosen those rusty chainring bolts. (Of course you may want to pull the crank to check and re-pack the bottom bracket bearings, but thats a separate issue. I did my conversion (also a mid-'80s Fuji) last fall, and haven't gotten around to doing the bottom bracket yet.)

that sounds like it would be a good idea, is that the tool i would need to get my crank arm off if i need to?

siq. i didnt think i would be able to fit the 42 tooth chainring over the crank arm but it worked!

yah pretty much im pretty new on working on bikes so i get stuck on easy ****. im just trying to give everyone a play by play i guess ya mean?

ah, another tool junkie! gotta love taking on a new project that requires new tools. it's "siq!"

that fuji looks like a good start. make sure to post some pics when you get it all cleaned up and finished. when a new member comes around and everyone is actually helpful we all kind of subconsciously root for ya and wanna see the project finished

im definatly posting pics when i get it done!
i pretty much got it ready for when the wheelset comes all i have to do is run the brake cable and ill be ready to ride !

btw is this what you need to take those cranks off?

Back to your chain and cog width, you're probably better off with 3/32" than 1/8". You existing chainring is a 3/32". You can find a gazillion cogs in both widths, but your chain selection (and value, IMO) is better for 3/32". If you're really keen on 1/8", it will work fine, but I don't see any particular advantage to going that route unless you're already contending with 1/8" track chainrings and the like.

i love this bike sooo much.
definatly the best bike ive ever ridden soooo fast.
42/16 gearing works great.

the chainline would only work with the inner chainring, how would i get it to where i only need like one chainring, like say later on if i got differnet cranks would the chain line work on the single chainring, or do i need spacers for the back cog or what?

If your Question is how to achive a good chainline when moving the 42T to the outside of the spider,the answer is Bottombracketspindle...a shorter one.The good news is that manny old spindles are uneven,so it might work to just flip it.Or you can get a new Cartridgetype BB in the right length.
As far as new Cranks...most Cranks need their specific BB length to achieve 42mm Chainline.

that bike looks fantastic. congrats.

all you need to do to get down to one chainring is go get some single stack chainring bolts (or ask for BMX chainring bolts) - any local shop should have them. then you can take the 49t off and use the shorter bolts to secure the 42 on the insed of the crank (where it is now).
