GT track frame

I found a GT triple triangle frame with track ends!
it's cro-moly, not aluminum.

looks like this:
http://www.bikecult.com/works/archive/gttrackpit.html

I haven't assembled it yet, (getting it powdercoated) but I'm going to run it fixed.

anyone know anything about these steel frames? (google only shows info on kinesis aluminum frames)

I'd appreciate ANYTHING you may know, or have heard, thanks.

Ep3licious 02-12-08 06:22 PM

i believe the frame is called the gt pulse

Oh No 02-12-08 06:24 PM

or the gtb. they're identical but the pulse is better.

shants 02-12-08 06:35 PM

i think you guys missed the part where he mentioned that his is cro-moly. however, that picture is of a GTB, which is 7005 aluminum with a cro-moly (steel) fork. joe_bike, does your frameset look exactly like the one in the picture? why do you think that it is steel?

Gyeswho 02-12-08 06:36 PM

you my friend have something very valuable. those are VERY VERY VERY RARE to come by since GT only made a few of them. I had a Pulse but sold it since it was too small:( It is a great frame though with nice quick handling. That steel should treat you right ;)

I think this is the one you got, no?

no thats one of the aluminum framed track bikes they made, they also made a "GTB" (generic track bike) and mine is neither of these.

it has a "4130" cro-mo tubing sticker on the lower section of the seat tube, and a magnet sticks to the frame all over, so it's definitely steel, light too (maybe 4 lbs)

I can't find any info, I was hoping someone here might have seen or heard of these.

MattFashion 02-12-08 06:50 PM

i dont think you can go wrong with either. from what i remember of GT's high end stuff prior to the merger, they were awesome. i used to swear by everything they made.

shants 02-12-08 06:51 PM

like gyeswho said, there were indeed some gt track frames made from steel. they are indeed extremely uncommon and you have found yourself quite a frame. might i ask what size it is?

j0e_bik3 02-12-08 06:55 PM

mine looks EXACTLY like the white one above, with the tapered top tube, it does NOT have that super high seat tube (pursuit bike?, forgive my ignorance)

and like I said it's definitely steel and a 54cm ctc, JUST my size too!

now I'm all excited! (I love old obscure rarities you can ride/drive):

67 mustang, diamond edition (only 250 made, and ONLY in nortthern cal)
82 Yamaha vision (RUNNING!) thats like IMPOSSIBLY rare
and now this.

this is so freakin cool, thanks everyone :D

Gyeswho 02-12-08 07:23 PM

what's the history on how you got it?

schleven 02-12-08 07:40 PM

Had an opportunity to pick one of those True-Temper olympic frames up about a month ago. (Chose a Romic pursuit instead).

From what I was told (by an Olympian) the True-Temper frames were built by Yamaguchi and labeled GT since they were the national sponsor. Good frame for sure.

I bought it from a guy that got it in an estate sale with about ten other bikes, he tried to strip the frame using a chemical stripper, but I guess got frustrated midway through, because I got it looking like something out of a horror movie with multi colored drips dried in mid drip, hanging like icicles all over. all could make out was the 4130 sticker, and part of the "T" from the logo on one of the down tubes

I took it down to a local powdercoat place that does media blasting, and it'll be bare metal by the end of the week.

now to decide what color to paint it (this is a keeper)

anyone wanna buy a steamroller? :roflmao:

chrism32205 02-12-08 08:42 PM

Be sure to post pics when you get it painted and built up!

xxsoultonesxx 02-13-08 12:39 AM

how much for the steamroller shipped to 98338? what size is it?

Soil_Sampler 02-13-08 01:07 AM

Shaklee GT track frame, I believe they were made at their custom shop in Longmont? Colorado.

oeuf 02-13-08 01:17 AM

I don't know much about frames but that white one is purdy.

SinVoz 02-13-08 01:34 AM

luckeeeeeeee....mind if i ask how much it set you back?

yes you may,....

$325, set up as a single speed, with nothing remarkable on it save the rear nutted campy hub, and the "shop of horrors" paint job.

I'll sell one of my other bikes so my landlord doesn't think I'm running a LBS (apartment, all the bikes are on the balcony) and sorry that steamroller comment was in jest,.. I shoulda sed: "anyone wanna buy a miyata"? :D

and yes I sure will, I was thinking about british racing green,..with maybe some metallic silver somewhere,..set it up with silver/aluminum running gear

now I just wanna ride the thing

I can't COUNT the number of times I saw, or heard of some cool vintage bike, and either got there too late, or had no cash,..this is rather nice for a change.

have you thought about restoring the Shaklee colors?

yes I did,...that would be the most valuable,...but I'm not crazy bout it

so if I ever sell it, I'll probably re-paint it in the original red, white, and blue or go with that white/blue/green fade shaklee scheme, one of my best skills is "make this bike look like this picture in this magazine", and it'd be rather fun,...long as I don't have to ride it around like that. :D

I will never understand why framebuilders ever thought fades looked good. If the blue went all the way to the point where the stays are brazed/interface with the other tubes, I think it would look great. If you repainted using those colors I think a more modern style of painting wouldn't be a bad idea.

Maybe even do some wispy lines of color on the downtube and toptube, whatever.

Awesome find on the frame OP. :) I hope you enjoy it.

schleven 02-13-08 12:11 PM

Is it Shaklee or Yamaguchi? A friend of mine who rode in the Olympics has a couple of the Red, White and Blue True-Temper frames and he said they were built by Yamaguchi in his shop in Colorado then branded with GT because they were the national sponsor.

here's what it looked like after I got it and took a scotch pad to it (knocked off all the hanging paint boogers):
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...Ttrackbike.jpg

the ONLY mark anywhere on the frame is the GT symbol on the back of the top tube, where it sticks through the seat tube, no number on the BB shell, or on any of the tubes.

the original paint was long gone, and the bike had been black, then blue, then orange, then black, and now this horrid tiger stripe crap. it'll be back from the blasters firday)

That has a nice Eddie VanHalen vibe to it... you should have left the paint! ;)

Seriously, the green should look great, I can't wait to see it!

dobber 02-13-08 05:37 PM

I'm confused. Does that thing have canti brakes on it?

GT did make all steel road frames for quite some time. Looks like some kinda modded road frame.

willypilgrim 02-13-08 06:07 PM

there's one parked at a rack at my building actually. looks exactly the same but horizontal dropouts instead of track dropouts. hard to imagine that sort of front wheel clearance if it was actually designed for the track, and I don't think too many bikes of that vintage were designed to be commuter fixed gears.

jim-bob 02-13-08 06:19 PM

Yeah, that looks like some 80s roadie's 'training bike'.

I like it.

blickblocks 02-13-08 06:57 PM

That touring fork has a long fork offset for a track-angled headtube. How does it ride?

edit - So it is a road bike...that's the original fork, nevermind.
