Advantages of using BMX pedals?

In terms of versus track pedals.

This photo from Fast Friday got me thinking about it:

Clearly he still has clips and straps.

deathhare 02-15-08 10:25 PM

Seems pretty stupid to me.

blickblocks 02-15-08 10:28 PM

Those things exist to let you ride in sneakers right? Nothing wrong with that. I think they look cool (and goofy with anything but neon pink clips).

is he truing a wheel with a hammer?

oh and i bet there better at increasing the weight on your bike

stachemaster 02-15-08 10:40 PM

that is a pump. a topeak road morph.

deathhare 02-15-08 10:40 PM

truing your wheel with a pump must be hell :)

jdms mvp 02-15-08 10:50 PM

they are similar to platforms, they are probably ALOT comfier than my custom nuevos :(

sp00ki 02-15-08 10:57 PM

i bet 20" purists HATE track bikes right now.

pirate. 02-15-08 11:47 PM

they would give you a wide very grippy platform

i just saw this. interesting, i guess..any more pics?

zelah 02-16-08 01:01 AM

weird late double post

rduenas 02-16-08 01:01 AM

That's pretty much the most detailed photo I can find.

Using those pedals doesn't seem like a completely farfetched idea, especially if you can still run clips and straps. I'm tempted to try it out, to be honest.

I think I'll try out this set up this weekend. I'd like to have a more solid platform under my feet since I ride in sneakers.

knucks 02-16-08 01:50 AM

If you do try it out, take some more pics of the setup? I really like my Nike Dunks but haven't ridden in them since they're too bulky for my current pedals..

rduenas 02-16-08 01:56 AM

Toe overlap would be ridiculous that's for sure, a full 3cm forward.

andre nickatina 02-16-08 02:21 AM

Well, I guess if you're trying to just do tricks then it's cool...

as for me, I'll take some Time ATACs or MKS tracks.

Who cares, the 24" purists probably hate the 20" purists.

The 27" purists despise the 700c purists.

BMX platforms actually make much more sense than riding in sneakers with pedals designed for slotted cleats. And that's certainly the case for the type of posing.. errr.. riding that goes on at one of these "skid and wheelie" events.

wroomwroomoops 02-16-08 07:41 AM

A week ago I was going up a steep, completely frozen bridge. Rear wheel washed out and if I hadn't put down my foot in an instant, I would have gone down. The fast foot action was enabled by having BMX platforms. BMX pedals are much grippier than normal platforms, and look nicer, imho.

Before you attack me, remember that I ride singlespeed, so I don't have a critical need to be strapped/clipped in.

Zombie Carl 02-16-08 07:44 AM

I'm in the market for pedals that can be ridden upside down more comfortably for hella rad tricks that I don't want to be clipped in for. I think this is the advantage of the BMX pedal.

barba 02-16-08 07:52 AM

They would be great for winter riding. They are a little wide, so if pedal strike is an issue for your bike I might think twice.

yohannrjm 02-16-08 07:57 AM

I've run BMX pedals without the clips. They are super comfortable for grocery runs, etc. Had to remove them as I could not stop trying to pull up on them whenever I came to a hill or wanted to accelerate quickly.

Can't go back after being clipless for the last year. Still, the BMX pedals were super stable. Felt really good; big, though.
