52x17. Nice and quick.

46:17 ... 17 skid patches . Even though skidding/skipping ruin tires and can make them lumpy and uneven i feel that 17 skid patches will shave down my tires evenly.

I'm building my new bike with 44 x 16/15 (it's double fixed hub)
Currently I'm running 48x19 since it's winter, but it's really too low.

Somehow for me too the most comfortable gearing I've ever had was 42x15 on a conversion I sold ages ago.

gbarchus 02-21-08 04:14 AM

45X16 ..and can do some hills!

fanta510 02-21-08 04:23 AM

1:1
any other ratio and you are not truly connected with your wheel and are using the crutch of mechanical advantage.
Plus you know exactly how fast your wheel is spinning and how it is oriented at all times.

sfcrossrider 02-21-08 08:11 AM

42X17 with a 175. I race FG cross, so I needs ta spin.

lhcommons 02-21-08 08:35 AM

42x16. The other side of the flip flop hub is empty and forlorn, so I may add something smaller 14 or 15 maybe? My short daily commute has a nice steep hill in it, so I don't want to go to much higher... but I pedal like mad going down the other side, so it would be nice then.

Me too. I rode 52x16 (86gi) singlespeed for a few years in college but once I started puting in more mileage everyday on my commute I found 52x16 wore me down after a few weeks. My area is flat, but in the late fall I had 4 weeks with a 10-20mph headwind coming home from work. Every dang day. That was enough to switch to 52x17 fixed/free (82gi). Now I dont bog down in winds and still have enough top end for dealing with traffic.

I understand that as I spent a good part of last summer running 81 gear inches and after a chain-ring and cog swap ended up with 77 gear inches... still have all the top end and a little higher spin for hills and headwinds.

I like my poosie ass 38/15 for a girly 66.4 inches (170mm/700X25), and 15 skeed patches.

when you get to 50 years old, you'll understand.
