The best ratio is one that results in the top of your chain to be parallel to the road.
I run 42/17 on 700x28's on the road. On the grittier stuff I run 32/16 on 26x2.0's |
52 x 20 - Conversion - 70.2"
47 x 18 - EAI - 70.5" |
46/18 right now and mostly for the 10 mile commute. Anything more and the stopping and starting starts to give my knees trouble. But if just the track or long, non stop road rides, I'd go much higher.

What are you using for a chainring? I am want to run 47/17 on my nicer bike. I have a 47T Rocket ring on my beater, but I would like something a bit nicer for my nicer bike. However, I am not really all that into dropping a ton of money on it.

Beater: 42x17
Pista: 48x16 (going to drop down once spring comes around and I put it back on the road). |
53x18

39x18T w/700x32c tires on the fixed commuter.
58.5 gear inches; 100 RPM = 17.4 mph. |
52x16 right now.
But i just do it once in a while to go fast and remind myself why 48X16 is the perfect gear for my conditions. |
I ride 48x17 right now.
But I'm thinking of taking it down to 46x17 or even 44x17. I want to work on spin. |
up, x, down, b, L, Y, R, A.

47-16s on Arayas+tubulars but I just built a set of Velocity Deep Vs and damn these wheels are heavy. I dropped to 47 X 17 yesterday on the Deep Vs and it feels better. I think I will go to 48 X 17 and see how that feels.

i was running 48x16 as of 2 hours ago when i switched to 48x17 for the skid patches; that one extra tooth makes such a difference.

Just built my first bike, with 48x17. I was worried it would be too high, but it seems like a popular choice!
|
how do you figure out gear inches?
|
42x17 on the fair weather frenchie, 36x14 and 28x22 on the commuter/polo bike plus a crap wheel for winter at 28x14.
