i for one have really been enjoying hearing more people's "today i did this on my bike and it was awesome" stories without being dead certain that its going to turn into a flame war about semantics or some inane discrepancy no one needs corrected.
people are posting more freely around here lately.
also, the dead of winter means less clueless newbies asking a million helmet/brake/pista/bandanna questions. so that's making this place a little more hospitable as well. there's also a bunch of people on here that i'm realizing i would probably get along with really, really well with in real life too.

Without a doubt. But what ol' Dutret never understood--and what some of the people who fawn over him still don't understand--is that having all the knowledge isn't the same as having all the answers.
The Dute knew a great deal about the optimal way to set up a bike...for a guy like him. But other people have other criteria for what makes bike riding worthwhile. Including, but not limited to, fun. These people will cheerfully and knowingly take a minor performance hit in exchange for a bike that they can't wait to hop on to in the morning. That's their choice. The Dutrets of the world can't accept this for some reason.
Do we really know he's gone, BTW? For all I know, he could be in the Alt Bike Culture subforum right now, banging out an indignant lecture on how mechanically inefficient it is to ride bicycles consisting of dumpstered frames welded on top of each other by drunk anarcho-hessians.

Dutret is more than just the simple stereotype you're trying to cast him in. For example, he was one to give valuable advice to people who are genuinely interested in riding their bikes. Also, dutret will side with the small guy every time. And he is also unconventional (a free thinkier, if you want); like the one time when half SSFG stood in line to fellate the LBSes, he very systematically de constructed the whole mystique of buying stuff at the LBS.

I was debating if I should post on this thread or not. I've known Alex for several years and I thought that i may be too close to the situation to be able to cast a clear vote. I knew that I must take it seriously because if there is anything that i have learned from the American political system it is that EVERY vote counts.
Then I read the Ask Juvi thread.
I'm sorry Alex, you may know things, but Juvi knows all the right things.
You may be witty, but Juvi is so witty that he made me cry.
Last I checked you don't have a beard, Juvi has a beard.
And your name isn't Kyle, Juvi's is. That is, if his name really is Kyle. (for everyone else: my name is Kyle too)
I've cast my vote.
