Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Country Racing?

I live in North Carolina and while we have alleycats around here in Raleigh they don't happen often due partly to the fact that even our capital city isn't very urban. I do all of my commuting fixed and regularly go on 40-60 mile rides through the country timing myself trying to get faster. I had an idea. What about open course races through the country on fixed/singlespeed that mostly test speed and endurance. Like when the tour de France was done fixed. Anyone think that this could catch on in more rural places?

Sounds like a typical road race to me, you're just limiting it to SSFG. Have at it, I'd say. I'd bet there'd be a lot of roadies who train on fixed gear in the off-season that would be interested in doing a fun fixed-race.

It just seems safer than alleycat and more condusive to my geographic surroundings. There are other obstacles though, like deer, dogs and pitch black nights.
