Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

A funny thought...

Seeing some guy trying to steal some other guy's fixed gear bike, trying to make a "quick" getaway and not knowing that it is fixed gear...just imagine that for second

Bikes: 70's le Tour with brazed track drops

i've always laughed at that idea.
i lock my bike up behind the restaurant i work at, and i can't see it at all.
but i always figured if someone tried to steal it, they'd likely end up somewhere about 1 crank revolution away on the ground.

bonus points if there's egg beater pedals and it's raining out. also, a ridiculously high or low gear ratio.

i think eggbeaters in general are anti theft. at least if they intend to ride away. i dont usually see bike theif type people rolling around in bike shoes

i once had some really really drunk guy try to walk away with my bike that was sitting 5 feet in front of me. i was gonna let him try to get on it since he was definitely in zombie walk mode but my friend who was with me at the time gave him a firm 'what the **** do you think you're doing?' he kind of looked up at us, then continued on his zombie stumble down the sidewalk.

Let 'em take 2 steps then it's the old massive-kick-to-the-small-of-the-back maneuver.

I think I prefer the non-violent solution. It seemed to work pretty well.

You really think riding a fixed gear bike is hard, dont you?

Bikes: Hummer H2

my friends and i had the idea of hiding in a bush with a camera and leaving a cheap fixie leaned up against a building on a saturday night. keep the gearing nice and tall, and leave it brakeless. someone would eventually steal the bike and try to sprint away.
madness would then ensue for all of youtube to see.
unfortunately, 1) too much risk of legal repercussion, and 2) too much work

Bikes: Continuously changing assortment. Do Two Unicycles make one bike?

that happened to a friend of mine. She left her bike (fixed gear) outside the post office for a second. (this was a bad move on her part) when she came out she watched a bag lady take a nasty spill. She said "Hey! That's my bike!" The woman replied, "You can have it back! It's broken anyways! It can't coast"

well, the fixed gear element to preventing bike thievery is really only effective if there's a heated pursuit.

for example, in the one video, the guy that steals the rigged bike just takes it and slowly rolls away with it... and figured out in a very controlled manner that the bike was fg.

however, if you were in an urban-ish setting and performed a similar experiment but gave chase the moment after the thief got on the bike then he/she would probably sprint away (getting to a higher speed before realization that coasting isn't an option) as well as make turns to elude pursuers. it's the turns where i'd imagine a thief would most likely attempt to stop pedaling, as well as learn that they cant coast...

then madness would ensue.

and actually spooki, i doubt any legal repurcussion from such an endeavor. hypothetically, if i were to steal a motorcycle yet have no idea how to ride one and consequently bust my ****, no judge would ever rule against the motorcycle owner.... same would go for a bicycle, right?

However if a bike like that was planted with malicious intent. That might be a different story.

I've forgotten my lock a couple times while on beer/food runs and just unhooked the brakes (live on giant hill).

Not sure of the legality of doing that.

nothing like time lapse video of a bike that gets stolen.

if you leave your bike unlocked in front of a store, i don't care for how long, it's your own ****ing fault and no one elses that it got stolen.

i've done it once in front of a store with tons of windows for 3 minutes at 6:00am and even then i was horribly paranoid, and the whole time i knew i had no one to blame for it but myself if it did somehow get stolen.
