Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Just put your feet up on the fork crown. No big deal.

With a fixed gear, the back cog (thing the chain goes on) is fixed to the hub (center bit of the wheel). Thus, if the wheel is moving, the pedals are too.

Plow, if you are considering getting a fixed gear bike, get a fixed/fixed or fixed/free rear hub. That way, you can have a fixed gear on one side and a freewheel on the other.

Be sure and get brakes.

Assuming this is serious, I am not sure why you would want a fixed gear if you didn't know this.

I am reluctant to jump in, as this smells of troll droppings, but coasting means the bike is moving but the pedals are not. A fixed gear bike can not do that. If the bike is moving (or rather, if the back wheel is turning) then the pedals are turning.
