Speaking of Freds

Why is it that you are supposed to wear your sunglasses over the straps of the helmet? I've found no benefit to doing that, and I end up flinging my sunglasses to the ground everytime I finish a ride and take my helmet off. I read somewhere that you are a Fred if you have your glasses under your helmet straps. Here's another question, what's with the socks over the clipless shoes on warm days?

Having the sunglasses over the straps prevents the straps from digging the glasses into your temples.

I think your seeing some dork with the covers over his shoes was a fluke. Those are for winter to keep the wind out.

Hahaha maybe I should have my helmet on tighter then that kinda worries me.

Just ate **** last thurs too. Corning hard on road bike at ~20 mph, tried to mash through the turn (like would on fixed obviously) and slid out on some grit/gravel. Ruined shorts/chamois, ruined BRAND NEW pearl izumi jersey and road rash all along my right side (worst at hip).

Didn't hit the domepiece or ruin the bike though thankfully.

My leather palmed-glove on the asphalt and the scraping of my right side made me stop.

wow, this makes me feel a lot better about the fall i had the other week when i also slid on gravel while cornering and only ended up ruining my newly broken in cork tape and putting a nice deep gash into my right hand... also scraped up the sidi's/time atacs nicely, but it gives them character and shows that i actually ride right?

I was reading in the roadie trade thread and some guy was trying to get rid of a brand new saddle because he scuffed it. I've seen **** like that more than once and it absolutely blows my mind.

As much as I admire a shiny bike as much as the next person, what happens if he scuffs his replacement saddle?

I am the "Fred" that the poseurs look for in their closet and under their bed before they fall asleep in their Lance Armstrong pyjamas.

Strange... cause we all know Lance sleeps in Eddie Merckx pyjamas.

If I have to explain that I will really have to kill you.

A 'Fred' is someone with all the nice kit who is a crap rider and/or is a bit clueless about bikes as far as I know. i.e. Someone who gets all dressed up in the full lycra gear with a shiny new bike just to ride to the coffee shop. It's a roadie term.

I thought it was more the other way around. The straps prevent the tight arms of sports/riding glasses from digging into your head. I'm not sure if it's bad fit, bad design or something bizarrely intentional myself. Maybe it's a 'chicken or the egg' thing.

Actually, a fred is a pretty good cyclist. According to my definition, a fred is about 2 times as good a cyclist as the average hipster.

Thats an OCP, a roadie hipster. Freds are the most honest form of cyclist, they really love cycling and use the most practical equipment to do it.

I wear regular glasses and wouldn't consider over the straps, but I'm a Fred on my roadie. I have Keo Sprints on there but don't own clipless shoes. I must look like I stole it. Plus there's the $20 Bell helmet. . .

You have clipless pedals but not clipless shoes?

I generally use only two terms. Squids and Goats.

Squids are high end roadies, mandatory lycra wearers, 22lb full-sus owners, etc... People who drive 10 minutes to the start of a 30 mile ride, who have the shop change the flats in their carbon bike, who get pissy if the shop is so backed up that they can't get their tune-up back before their next weekend ride. People who can't stand to see their bikes get dirty and would never ride them in the rain, who drive 20 min. to work with the bike in the car so they can take an hour ride at lunch instead of just riding to work, who only go to trail maintenance days when the press is there. Anyone who has recently paid retail for a new colnago or is truly concerned about how PRO they look on the group ride.

Goats are real commuters (not hybrid bike, 5 minute ride with rack and pannniers, only on good days), messengers, co-op workers, trail builders, etc... People who get dirty, who save for five months and can still only afford a mid-level bike (and love it), who know how to overhaul their own bike because they can't afford the shop. People who will stop and help fix a flat on a kids walmart bike even though it means using their last CO2. People who really help the cycling community and aren't just here to look good.

The other people, family cyclists, triathletes, the fair weather hybrid bike 5 minute commuter, the hipster with the pro paint on their pista concept... well, they're not really cyclists, so they don't count.

OK, thats not really fair. Just because you have the kids in tow doesn't mean you're not a cyclist. But I meant it about the triathletes.

And the 5 minute fair weather "commuter" with the hybrid and panniers is just one guy in atlanta who happens to own a shop. Josh knows who I'm talking about.

Ugh, that's right. Whenever I scrounge up enough for a decent set, (paychecks = $50 in spending money) there's something else I'd rather buy. I ended up putting the cleats in the pedals for a better platform.

Hmm. I've been considering getting clipless shoes, to ride in my clips/straps just to get a stiff sole. I'm sure they would just slide right out though, even with my straps tight, with nothing to grip on the sole.

You might consider some of those recessed cleat mountain bike shoes. They tend to have rubber to walk on.

edit: or maybe cyclocross cleats.

And happens to be actually named Fred
As far as the glasses over or under the strap thing, depends on the glasses for me. Regular Rx type under, Oakleys (and other wide style) over.
