I have a black and a honey brooks, on the touring and fixed gear bikes, respectively. Rock the proofhide, and don't forget to put some on the bottom, especially if you don't use fenders.

I've got a porous leather saddle, gets ****ed up by anything greasy (other bikes, usually); wha y'all recommend?

And, um, it's a pleasure to meet your acquaintance.

don't over do it... you'll be sorry. Just do it once and then not again for a year. Use only Brooks brand proofide.

Is it really necessary to use only Brooks' leather conditioner? I've got a new one coming in the mail and I don't want to screw it up. I understand why you would want to Brooks proofide with a Brooks saddle but I also understand that companies try and rope you into using only their products when they are nearly identical to other stuff on the market. Does proofide have a magic formula or something?

The main reason I ask is because I live a few miles from an actual saddle/leather shop and I figured I'd just pick some leather conditioner over there.

I think it is important to just use the $5 Brooks brand proofide. Its cheap! Its the one they make for their saddles. I don't know what leather shoe or jacket conditioner will do. Hey read this page:

The proofide tin lasts a really long time. I proofided the **** out of my Pro when I got it and havent touched it for two years and several soakings since. The tin is still 90% full. When it gets wet it discolors where it soaked through and the dye came out, then as I ride it the proofide still in the saddle actually recirculates the colour and it gets completely uniform again. It's alive man.

yeah, proofide is as cheap or cheaper than other leather conditioners. and it's made by brooks for brooks saddles. it's a formula that has been in use for a long long time and i trust it. plus you use it so rarely that it's not a huge re-occuring investment.

What ever you use don't use a lot of it. The amount of a large pea is plenty, any more and you'll over condition the saddle and it will be in danger of sagging.

FWIW I use Sno*Seal, and have for the past 15 years with no problems.
