Velosteel Hubs

Anyone know where to get a Velosteel coaster hub?

I don't know of anywhere in the US, but I do have a line on a place in Germany. They sell for $26 but they apparently ship Express only so the shipping is ~$100!
If several folks wanted to go in with me on an order, the per-hub delivered price will come down dramatically. Shipping cost is the same per order (I checked one hub, and three hubs - same shipping.)

Anyone?

Thanks,
Muttley
PS I know Kogswell used to have them, but I haven't been able to reach them on the phone, voicemail, or email.

if we get enough people for a group buy, i'm in for a handfull, maybe four or so.

Kogswell offers up excuses and a plethora of phone numbers in this thread.
Have you tried them all? How bad do you want these hubs?

Kogswell has said in other coaster threads within the last couple of months that they're planning on ordering more Velosteels at some point, but nothing about when that might be.

yeah kogswell's gotta get his stuff together. plus, apparently last time all the hubs were for splined (?) cogs, rather than threaded for track cog/lock ring (which velosteel does offer, as seems like a much more versatile option). the velosteel website has a 20 hub minimum order. I'm pretty sure we could cover that. Anyone speak or know someone that speaks czech?

AHemp 03-06-08 03:11 PM

I would be in.

I actually have corresponded with Velosteel's sales manager, Josef Zimacek. His english is quite good. He offered to send me a sample hub for the princely sum of $15.70 + $30 shipping (seriously). I wrote back to ask about how I could get payment to him; he quit responding to my emails at that point. Hence, my thoughts of buying from a Euro dealer instead.
I gather that he may be on the road and out of touch a lot, so he may still answer. If so, I will post here to that effect.
Back to the group buy, if that works out I'd be in for 2 or 3 myself. Never done one of these myself, so if anyone has experience.... pass it along!
Thanks
Muttley

OK I heard back from the Velosteel sales manager. He is happy to sell me a case of hubs. He says he'll let me know on the shipping when I order, but a case weighs ~26 kg.
They list a case as 25 hubs, but they are happy to mix specifications within a case.
What I want is a 36 hole, 14 gauge spoke unit with the splined cog (same as Shimano, SRAM, and SA); 120 mm OLD and a 165 mm axle.
Is there a need for other variations? What mix?
When I get these things, I am thinking I'll put them on Ebay, perhaps as a "Buy it Now" item. That way I can accept payment via PayPal. Be warned that the fees to sell on ebay are 9-10%, and I will have to add those to the price of the hubs (still only a couple of bucks.) If there's a better way to distribute these things, please let me know.

A paypal invoice would be your best bet. Easier, and no need to use ebay.
What width are these?

veeco23 03-07-08 10:29 AM

i might be interested in one as well. let us know when you find out pricing and shipping and what not.

i've got a coaster brake with 650b on my polo bike and lubs it. so much fun.

Muttley 03-10-08 07:29 AM

OK Folks, the word is in from Velosteel. Ouch!
<Postage related to carton with 25 hubs would be around US$350.
Cheers,
Josef>
So figure $16 x 25 hubs = $400 + $350 shipping to USA= $750 /25 hubs = $30 each, plus whatever shipping is from me to you.
Is anyone still interested??

If so, please PM me with your requirements if other than what I've listed above (in post #10.) When they come in I'll invoice via paypal.
Thanks
Muttley

Case weight is 25 kg. That may be for some kind of express shipping, I know that some places the ordinary postal service is less than (shall we say) reliable.
$30 per hub stateside doesn't sound too awful, once you get it broken down to a per-unit price.
But I do need to get a feel for demand before I front the cash....

I'd be all over this deal if I hadn't bought a Sachs Torpedo Duomatic a week or so ago. Do I need a new 1 speed hub when I have the sweet two-speed original?

On a related note, what 36h rim will you all be using with your hub?

ERabbit 03-11-08 01:21 PM

Im definitely down for at least, one, which forum member do i need to contact via pm?

I'm using Alex something-or-other rims that Mike Flanigan at ANT powdercoated for me. I'll try to attach a photo of the bike. Right now it's a Miche track hub; the plan is to have both fixed and coaster rears for it, at least until I settle on one.
The front, FWIW, is a Sturmey drum hub...
