Hey Muttley
i got my hubs today (canada), i just came back from the post office.
Just wanted to say thanks, im going rim shopping :)

P.S. as youve already mentioned these hubs need to be opened up and greased / adjusted prior to use.
But i heard these hubs where sold without any grease at all and thats why you had to service them prior to first use. mine look packed with grease. Do they really need to be adjusted.
I'm planing on doing it anyways, but i was just curious.

Muttley 05-05-08 07:43 AM

When I stripped mine down, there was some grease in it. But I was always taught that you pack the cages full of grease, until it oozes out around the balls... and the cages were empty on my hub. I wiped everything down and packed it with Park grease, going light on the clutch rollers. It's not tough, just messy. Might as well pack the hub if only for peace of mind.

Muttley,

If enough people showed additional interest would you consider ordering another lot of hubs? I know I'm interested and it seems some others are as well.

You have proven that you can get them, and do sell / ship them responsibly. I would be willing to pay upfront for a hub.

Is anyone else interested?

mihlbach 05-05-08 12:02 PM

I'm interested if there is another order. I was tempted to get on on this one, but got distracted with other things.

diff_lock2 05-05-08 12:11 PM

Are these better than the shimano coaster brake hub?

baxtefer 05-05-08 12:22 PM

Much.

O Rly?

Muttley 05-08-08 07:39 AM

I've had several recent inquiries regarding hub availability.
Not sure I want to order another batch right now but I'll think about it. I thought the demand would be pretty well saturated after the first case....

Well OK, you folks started me thinking about it. I sent off an email to Velosteel to see if (a) they would sell me a smaller batch, and (b) if there is a cheaper way to ship the suckers compared to air express.
I've had maybe 4-5 people express an interest since the first batch sold out. SO maybe an order of 10 - 15 hubs, if they will go for that.
Those of you who are looking, what size cog, spoke count, and axle length are you looking for... just out of curiosity?

I'm interested regardless of the options, but I'd like an axle that could be spaced to 126mm, because I'd probably put the wheel in some old-ass road frame. 130mm would be even better. Either 32 or 36 spokes is fine by me. Don't know what cog size I'd use, because I don't have a chainring lined up, but something around 17t would be good.

elmcitizen 05-12-08 06:21 AM

I'd actually like a 120mm, this way if need be i could space it out to 130mm. As for spokes, 32 or 36 is fine. And for the COG either 17t or 18t works.

Thanks again Muttley for help put this together for us!

Velosteel hub available

I have a Velosteel hub from Muttley's batch order. It's not going to work for my purposes(motorized bike)
36 hole.120mm spacing.Brand new.Anyone interested send me a PM

Muttley 05-18-08 07:24 PM

Sorry it didn't work out for you. What was the problem?

neurath 05-19-08 06:49 AM

Muttley
Well I think I'm going to 12 ga.spokes and I would have to bend the brake stay to fit.I could probably make it work but the Velosteel is such a nice hub I would rather drill and bend on something else.Plus I did add a front drum brake.Ron

motoko 05-20-08 05:51 PM

I'm Down for getting one too.

120mm spacing.
32H preferably, but 36H is cool too.
17T

Thanks

p.s. don't worry. US shipping address

frymaster 05-21-08 03:31 PM

i've been lurking this thread since forever and kind of waffling. but now i'd like to get in on a future group buy too.

so, if and when this happens again i'd be down for 2. 120mm should be fine and i don't care about spoke counts. 18 or 19 t if possible.

Muttley 06-15-08 06:31 PM

I've had maybe a half-dozen inquiries... sorry, but I think I won't be ordering another case at this time. Hopefully someone like Velo Orange or Kogswell will rise to the occasion.

I'd like to get one of these hubs, but I need one with a 24t snap on cog, 117mm spacing, 165mm axle and a 14/24 oval chainstay strap - Is there anyone who is willing to put together an order?

IMO, no. Not really. I managed to procure a couple a few years back. They are rather handsome, and the internals look very nice. But they are heavier than the comparable Shimano, and the braking was never all that great. I compared it to a new Shimano CB hub. Both using 27" wheels and the same tires. After a couple years, it seems the Velosteel never really broke in the way it seemed it needed. Braking exhibited less modulation than I'd like, and not the amount offered by the Shimano and it's many clones. One minor quirk I found annoying was that the hub didn't like to roll backward, the internals binding up. Of course few folks coast backwards, but when rolling in and around parking spots and such, I found this behavior annoying.

The ones I got seemed to only have symbolic amounts of vaseline-like grease. Perhaps that has changed.

Thinking of doing another group order. Go here.
