Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

It's normally spelled "Raleigh." I think you bought a counterfeit.

I just converted 1974 53cm to SS for a friend as a winter warrior.

Only issue we had was with the BB english threading. We did a bit of stripping but with a re-tap & die and the use of a lock nut and lock tite on the drive side it worked out, using the original cranks/BB. He rides it every day. I got the bike free and within a couple hours turned it into a SS beast. He's a real utilitarian or else we might have ended up with one like this (last picture - from FFG).

Anyway, you can do it on the cheap or spend dough as with any conversion.

Enjoy.

Through the magic of backwards land, I ride a geared Grand Prix that used to be fixed conversion.

yo, I got the baddest Gran Prix:

Single speeded, 1971 G-Prix, 39x16, cruise ratio, full fenders half painted pink, giant effing basket, and 700x32 tires for monster trucking all of philly's glass. Not to mention a single front brake. It doesn't go fast enough to where I have to stop that quick on it.

Oh, and I've been learning pedal grinds on ledges with it, as well as nose picks to fakie on banks. I want to take it on a miniramp soon. Totally serious right now.

p.s.- memorial spoke card, v-day race spoke card I designed, and a james brown spoke card!!

p.s.s.- this bike has tons of stories from the last 4 years. Someone tried stealing my seat/post once while it was locked over night somewhere, but the post is siezed, so I have like vicegrip marks on my seatpost, and no seatpost clamp bolt. HAHAHA
