Basically I wanna know who races/rides cyclocross, who has done or ever thought of doing it fixed, and what you think of this whole "new" thing that these guys are attempting to put out: a mix between an alleycat and a cyclocross race with offroad checkpoints and (I'm assuming) cyclocross-esque obstacles mixed somewhere in between. Personally I think this is the coolest idea ever and from the first time I saw a real cyclocross video I thought to myself, "Damn that's bad ass... but what if they were fixed to boot?"

I almost want to build up a bike with two brakes, cyclocross tires and a fixed drivetrain...

I've done singlespeed cross, which was incredibly fun, but have never had the testicular fortitude to do it fixed. Had to stop doing it on my main bike, though, because I was ****ing up my wheels.

This looks like a lot of fun, but I don't think I have the right rig to use for it. I guess I could use my beater bike which needs new tires, and the rear wheel is out of true. I dunno.

I'm sure most of the guys that plan on doing it are going to change out their tires at best. Who knows.

yo. i'm one of the organizers. we're definitely encouraging people *not* to bring the "right" rig for these races. they're supposed to be fun and hard - the type of race where you can fall down a lot and not get hurt, you know? the more ridiculous the better.

but yeah, we're hoping people will ride their fixed commuters, with a knobby tire or two. that goes for the circuit race (sludgement day), the grasstrack racing, and the alleycatastrophe.

we have no pretensions that this is honest-to-goodness cyclocross, in the same way that we have no pretensions that it's an old-school alleycat. it's just some fun rough and tumble races.

I've been getting ready to build a ss cross bike and still haven't fully decided to go fixed are not. I'm pretty sure fixed is inevitable though.

I've been considering building up a bike for fun times offroad status. I've thought about the brassknuckle frame with a different fork and built up sort of bmx ish, short stem, ape hangers etc. I think it would be cool to get involved with some cyclocross type stuff. That looks sweet.

I have wanted something like this in Richmond for about four years now! It all started with riding my fixed Monstercross bike around the river and the idea came. The course would be a 1 mile crush and run path around the perimeter of an island (also featured in Hannibal), a bridge to the south side of the river, about half a mile of fire road, about three quarters a mile of tame single track, a staircase descent, back across the river on the bridge, a quarter mile of super-swoopy BMX-y singletrack, and a sprint to the finish. Probably about three miles total, all off road, and loads of fun. Of course the advised bike would be a converted 10 speed with 700x38's and it would rock!

there was an alleycat in SD last year (maybe 2 years ago?) that had an unannounced cyclocross-esque checkpoint through the golf course area of balboa park. i think everyone crashed.

Last year's Stairmaster stage of the TdC had a brief cyclocross section. Riding a track bike through grass and mud after having carried that swine up and down so many stairs was a ****ing *****.

Roll your own! I call it Psycho-cross. The event I put on was a mix of singletrack and dirt/gravel roads (25%/75%) with a major stream ford and a 5 mile climb. 2 laps of an 11 mile course plus a bonus singletrack prologue. The only rules were: fixed gear and no tires larger than 38s.

i did a cross race fixed this last season. it was a lot of fun and a lot of pain. i'd recommend trying a few races with a freewheel before going that route.

this aint a cross race. it will also be awesome, but a completely different animal. i'm gonna ride my fixed gear.

I'm one of the organizers for this series as well. Its gonna be super fun, and I wouldn't worry too much about not having the appropriate gear. I've been going out to Randall's Island with a track bike with 22mm tubular tires and I've had very few problems setting up the Sludgement Day course.

This is going to be soooo much fun.

Cyclocross sounded fun to me, but it seemed like it was just roadies who liked to play in the mud. Plus I cant commit money to another specialty bike.

Something in this format appeals to me. Low key people with beater bikes just looking to have a good time and maybe win something. All your tight geometry NJS bikes couldnt hack it (plus who would want mud on those beauties?) couldnt run tires large enough.

I'm also one of the organizers. The race will be epic, and we've got some good stuff lined up for out of towners.

Sludgement day will be the most cross-like race, with asphault, dirt roads, mud pits, gravel paths, sand and shouldering.

Harlemegeddon is an alleycat, but with a lot of off-road and hard-to-find checkpoints.

And dogpound: if you finish any of these races on a bigwheel, you are ****ing guaranteed an AWESOME prize. Same goes for that guy who did monstertrack on a pennyfarthing last year.

Lastly, I've done all of my pre-riding on my fuji track pro with 700x23 wheels. HTFU yall.

I would totally bring my KHS out though. It's seen enough **** weather and mud already to not worry about it, and you could totally fit an appropriate cross tire in the rear... and squeeze something useable up front.

Your second statement is actually the apt description of cyclocross. Roadies spend the winter on the rollers, not in CX.

there was a comment on the bikesnob post along the lines of, "i bet there will be lots of side events so that they can have plenty of time to stand around, because riding your bike for an hour is too much effort." but i can attest that Sludgement Day, the circuit race, will be extremely difficult.

Cyclocross is what the un-uptite roadies do in the off season. A few trackies as well.

You should still check out some "real" (brand tm) cross. You don't need a special bike necessarily, I finished 10th overall in the GA cross series last year on my Raleigh One-Way.
