BB lockring as spacer
I'm trying to create a wider chainline in order to work better with some new cranks.
Is there a danger in putting the fixed cog on free side, and using a bb lockring as a spacer to push it out a few mm? thanks Kevin Abbott |
..just make sure you use some loctite... there is 'some' danger.. its not ideal...but I've done it on multiple wheels for the last few years and havent had a problem yet.... <knock on wood>..

I would run at least a front brake with this setup.
|
I'd use an actual spacer instead of the lockring. Most lockrings I've seen have a bevelled edge on one side. A spacer will have flat parallel edges.
|
Assuming you are comfortable with hub bearings and hub cone nut adjustment, it would be more proper and hardly any more difficult to simply move spacer(s) from one side of the axle to the other to move the wheel in relation to the dropouts, thus also moving the cog relative to the chainring.

Unsure of Rainman's approach. You saying to move the wheel off-center?
Id rather just redish. Or use a spacer. |
..sometimes this isnt always an option.. like with the spinergy wheels I have...

Thanks for the suggestions. I am running a brake so there's no danger.
I will check for a taper on the lockring and will be sure to use loctite! thanks Kevin |
"If you re-arrange axle spacers, you have no choice but to re-dish."
untrue; if you dont mind an off-center wheel ;) |
..I also used bottom bracket cup spacer's instead of bb lockring..
