Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Some times it is more fun to not not drop em, or draft them, but keep just close enough so they feel the pressure of someone coming up on them and make them sweet it. If I do pass I try to do it on a hill....... knowing that they are likely to blow back buy me if I don't put some distance between us. I find this much more personally rewarding then simply passing any slower rider roadie or not

Most road riders don't spend much time on the MUP.

You jokers realize riding fixed actually makes you a better roadie, right? Unless you use your fixie as a cafe / grocery getter and never hit 30km/h. If you train regularly and seriously on a fixie, you will notice a serious step up in your ability to spin on the road bike.

I don't think most "roadies" hate fixed gears. I don't. It's threads like this that are evidence it's the hipsters , not the fixed gears.

edit: I think you will also find that a large majority of roadies have fixed/ss bikes.

I think that if you want to bluster about dropping roadies on bfssfg you should have to enter a cat 5 road race first. You don't have to place, just go in the race. If we implement this rule perhaps the number of epic facepalm posts will diminish.

only time I ever get to pass lycra clad riders is on ascents, and thats because i have no real choice than to hammer through it, but it does feel nice. All in all though I think they are just fred's spinning in lower gears, a roadie that is decent wouldn't be ascending up the hills around here spinning in such a low gear.
And to begin with, you don't drop into a lower gear to ascend a hill to begin with, seems contrary but the ascents is where that horsepower is what matters, not cadence.

my form significantly increased after riding my conversion for months, i never realised before how many dead spots i had in my rotations, and how unevenly I used to pedal. Otherwise you're wobbly and unstable as poo

for some reason I always get a kick to see a roadie on a conversion/training bike, it always catches me off guard and puts a smile on my face, in a good way.

so you admit that you get passed on ascents, AND THEN state that it's a bad idea to spin for THEM to spin a high cadence?

I showed up for a group ride with both my fixed gear bike and my roadie. It turned out only two other people showed up and they preferred a slower pace for the ride so I got out the San Jose. We did just over 50 miles at a pace of almost 15mph. I could've done the ride faster but we were having a great time. I could climb as well as they could or better but they left me on the descents; I can't really go much over 160 rpm without bouncing all over the place. Man, I love having brakes.

I've done a few group rides on my fixed against roadies and I haven't had trouble staying with them but they were the slower groups. The faster group rides would leave me in the dust on most rides; the rolling hills and descents would be to their advantage.

A good acceleration at the start of a climb followed by dropping gears so as to maintain that high cadence is the way to get up those climbs. Short hills can be mashed over but I'd have died if I had tried to climb Hytop on my fixie.

It's a perspective thing. A lot of us ride geared bikes. These subforums just help divide us into like minded groups so the recumbant guys don't have to weed through best tires for skidzzz threads. That's not to say I need to know which mess bag has the ipod pocket in the most convenient spot. Personally, I just like the carnage.

i had an issue with judging people by the way they looked, the bikes they ride.... wow i was a tool.... anyway on my bike trip i met this older couple (in there sixties i think), he was riding a nice bie (not a mega expensive one), and about 5'10" and his wife was riding a custom bike with smaller wheels because she was like 5'

anyway, they turned out to be doing 200+km a day... for 4 days in a row... we tried to keep there pace (being 18 and 19 we though we could do it fine) they dusted us off in about 30 seconds... ever since, i judge people on how awesome they are to talk too (and how they wear there helmet... backwards, i just laugh)
